Chapter Seven

Xavier was momentarily disoriented when he opened his eyes. He wasn’t sure where he was or where that irritating beeping noise came from. He yawned and tried to sit up, only to hiss as pain shot through his body. With the pain came the memory.

He’d been shot. Twice.

He glanced around as his mind began to focus. He was in a hospital room, and that irritating beeping was the machines he was plugged into. His left arm hurt like hell, along with his right leg. He needed pain meds. As tough as he was, he wasn’t going to deal with the pain if he didn’t have to.

“You’re awake.”

Xavier turned his head to see Matthew sitting in a chair by the window. The man looked exhausted as he stretched and then stood, walking over to Xavier’s bed.

“How do you feel?”

“Like I’ve been shot a few times.” Xavier tried once again to sit up. He had to use his good arm, and it wasn’t easy, but he managed to scoot up a little. Matthew messed with the buttons on the side of the bed, raising the top portion of the bed to a comfortable height. That was much better.

“Maybe because you were.” Matthew took a seat on the side of the twin-sized bed. “Did you get a look at who shot you?”

Xavier shook his head in frustration. “But I’m guessing it’s the same person who damaged my bike.”

“Got the mechanics working on it,” Matthew said.

Xavier glanced up at the circular clock on the wall to see it was close to noon. “Where’s Chief Gladstone?”

A smile tugged at the corner of Matthew’s mouth. “Guy stayed here most of the night. He wouldn’t leave until you came out of surgery, and he only left because he said he had to get home. I suspect he’ll be back.”

His mate did have a son to look after.

“I need some pain meds.” Xavier tried to readjust himself on the uncomfortable bed. Every time he moved the bed crinkled. The sound was annoying as fuck. The only thing worse was the plastic pillow. It was flatter than a damn pancake.

Matthew patted his knee. “I’ll get the nurse.”

Xavier watched as Matthew walked out before he settled back and stared up at the white tiles of the ceiling. As pissed as Eric had been at him, the guy had risked his own life to pull Xavier from the woods and then had carried him into the emergency room.

He smiled when he thought of how ridiculous the two of them had probably looked. It would have looked as if one mountain was carrying another. He was pretty sure the nurses had wagged their tongues last night.

And the chief had stayed vigilant over him the entire night. That said more about the man than Xavier cared to admit. They’d been on one freaking date and he was starting to develop feelings toward the man. There was no two ways about it. People didn’t argue like that unless there was something between them.

He thought about the argument they’d had and how the chief had accused him of being scared.
