I wake up in the familiar darkness of the basement.

Across from me, the dim bulb gleams above the metal door, which is locked again; there is no need to check on it.

My lids are heavy, falling shut again and again despite my efforts, and my body aches, every limb screaming. I struggle to push myself up on my forearms, the cement floor rough on the exposed skin of my hands and legs when I finally manage to sit.

Remy’s remains are gone, nothing but a faint metallic smell and the blotches of brownish blood on the floor left of him.

I look down at my shin.

Its lower part is twisted at an odd angle. The bone has healed wrong, but I don’t even have the strength for tears at the realization of what I will have to do.

If I hadn’t fought back, he wouldn’t have drank from me, and I would be feeling better now. This could have been avoided.

Or maybe not. Who knows, there is no sense in the man’s actions. The only constant is that he enjoys seeing me in pain.

I scoot over to the next best wall and lean against it heavily.

Fuck, this is going to hurt like shit. I pull my fucked leg closer to my body and feel along the odd angle of my healed shin. How long did it take to heal? This time, it will take longer.

After clamping my teeth onto the hood of my hoody, I force my eyes onto my shin, both hands gripping it, shaking as they do so.

The bone cracks. I scream around a mouth of fabric.

It takes me an agonizing second of wailing before I manage to force my eyes open again. My whole muscles tense up, and the fabric in my mouth dampens and crunches beneath my teeth as I rearrange the two parts in a way that should be straight.

Then I just hold it like that while my body shudders uncontrollably.

It takes long. More than half an hour, if I had to guess.

The bone hardens, and the pain subsides; the shuddering doesn’t.
