Chapter 4
MAYBE THEY ALL JUST needed to take a moment.
Even if this was an elaborate Halloween trick for her benefit, Cassandra could play along a bit longer. âOkay, letâs think. If this man was a ghost, maybe heâs buried here. Soldiers usually have a symbol marked on their grave.â
Cassandra stepped past several graves until she found a headstone with a flag. âSee? This one says he served in the Iraq War, but it sounds like your guy served in a different war. Maybe World War II or before.â The grave marker was made of polished granite and had a little holder for an American flag attached to the side. Fresh hydrangeas sat in a small vase showing that someone had visited recently. âDidnât you say the sailor had an old-fashioned uniform?â
Tony and Jessica found two more headstones with military flags, but neither were for a navy sailor. No way would they have enough time to walk around the entire cemetery until they narrowed down which military graves were the right era to be their ghost.
Did ghosts stay the same age as when they died? Cassandra sighed and resisted checking for the answer on Google. Theyâd sucked her into their search.
Cassandra looked at her watch. At this rate, theyâd finish the scavenger hunt in last place. âI donât think this is going to work,â she told the kids. âI promised your parents Iâd drop you off at the finish line by 8:30 p.m. Donât you have school tomorrow?
âWhat about the rock?â Tony had removed his Iron Man mask completely, his quiet voice as forlorn as his sad expression. âAnd Jessâs flower?â
âGuys, weâre supposed to have fun. Remember the prizes? We might be too late to win the volleyball tickets, but thereâs free pizza or donuts.â
Disappointment burned in her stomach. Desperately she seized at an opportunity to regain control of the outing. âLook at the list and choose the next stop to take more photos. Then, Iâll treat you to ice cream!â
Jessicaâs face didnât look nearly as excited about ice cream as Cassandra had expected. Cassandra offered, âWant to trick or treat at a few houses and eat the candy?â She could go for a Twix bar herself.
The kids ignored her and made some silent, rapid signs between them that went over Cassandraâs head.
What else did ten-year-olds like to eat? Her odds of salvaging this night decreased as the seconds ticked by.
Tony said, âWe could ask Father Damien.â
So much for distracting them with snacks. They were obsessed with helping their ghost. She didnât have a better idea for directing them back into the game. Maybe the priest knew of previous ghosts and visions in this area.
