SAVANNAH
âHe was a good kid,â Erik went on. âFast and strong. He wouldâve totally excelled at sports. But that just wasnât in the cards for us.â
I watched as my lover dragged a chunk of pancake absently through a trail of syrup. He was eating voraciously, but talking slow.
âIf only heâd gone down that path,â he lamented sadly. âIf only we both had.â
âAnd why didnât you?â
Erik put down his fork. He pinched the bridge of his nose for a moment, as if warding away a headache.
âBecause my parents were assholes,â he said. âThey were never around, always working. When they werenât doing that they were constantly fighting. And eventually, screwing around on each other.â
âThatâs shitty,â I commiserated.
âYeah. Neither of them had time for little league or soccer practice or whatever Hayden and I asked for. Instead we were cut totally loose. Left to do our own thing.â
âItâs a lonely way to grow up,â I nodded. âIt sucks.â
âFor a while, yeah,â he agreed. âBut we had each other. And the freedom⦠well, we grew to enjoy that part. Especially as we got older. It was fun for a while, playing the grown-up. Doing whatever you wanted, without repercussions.â He looked away, his mind calling up some faded memory. âAlthough letâs be honest; freedom is the last thing you want to give a pair of rowdy teenagers.â
Erik downed some more of his coffee and went right back to pushing pancakes around his plate. I noticed heâd slowed down now. He seemed lost in thought.
âIt wasnât long before Hayden fell in with the wrong crowd,â he said. âBad people. Really bad. Itâs almost like they got off competing against each other, to see who could do the most terrible things.â
His voice trailed off angrily, without expanding on this part. I certainly didnât ask. I knew all about it.
âI looked up to him of course,â said Erik. âI thought my older brother was cool as hell. Slicker than shit. He always had money, pretty girls, even cars too. When he stopped going to school, my parents didnât even notice.â He set his fork down and pushed his plate away before looking up at me. âIt only made me want to quit also.â
âBut you didnât?â I guessed.
âAlmost,â he admitted. âI was already cutting class. Skipping days sometimes, too. And I had a new crowd, by then. My own little group of asshole friends who thought it would be cool to ditch tests and sneak away. To hang out anywhere else, but at school, and thenââ
I saw his eyes go totally and abruptly blank. Erikâs body language changed entirely, in all the time it took to blink. His shoulders were slumped, as he stared down at the floor.
âHayden was out joyriding when he flipped a stolen car,â he said. âBroke his neck. Happened instantly, at the point of impact.â
I sunk my head into my hands. I had no words.
âHoney, Iâm sorrââ
âHe didnât even feel it,â Erik went on. âOr at least thatâs what the paramedics told my mother and father.
