I looked over at Paige as I pulled down the long, winding driveway. She was mesmerized as she gazed out of the window at the fields on either side of us. She gasped, a grin splitting her lips as she pointed her finger at something through the window. “Dylan, look, a mama and her baby!” she exclaimed, pointing to a doe and her fawn.

I grinned at her. “Tonight, I’ll take you and Kaylyn up to my deer stand if we have time, let you guys watch for more. Kaylyn loves to do it,” I told her.

She beamed at me. “Really?” she asked. This girl of mine was so easy to please, and I loved seeing her happiness when I did. “Oh my God, I’m never going to want to leave here,” she laughed.

I grabbed her hand in mine and brought it up to my lips, kissing the back of her hand. “That’s fine with me, sunshine.”

She blushed as she went back to looking back out the window. “Just a warning,” I said as we pulled up in front of the house, “my mom can be kind of overbearing, but she’s very loving and sweet in the way she does it. You’ll probably be smothered in love,” I admitted, laughing softly. “And Kaylyn is a bit energetic.”

I turned the car off and leaned over to kiss her before I opened my door. The front door opened right as I did so, and my little girl came running out of the house, her mess of blonde curls flying behind her as she bounded across the porch. “Daddy!” she screamed.

I met her halfway and swept her up in my arms, squeezing her to me as I spun her in a circle. She squealed happily, her little arms clinging to my neck. She placed a big, messy kiss on my cheek before she leaned back to beam at me, her beautiful blue eyes shining. “I missed you, Daddy!” she yelled.

I grinned down at her. “I missed you too, munchkin.” God, with her in my arms, I finally felt complete again. I turned to Paige. She was still standing by the car, her eyes flickering with nervousness. I walked up to her, holding my hand out to her. She grabbed it instantly. “Kaylyn, this is my girlfriend, Paige,” I told her.

Kaylyn beamed at her. “Oh. My. Goodness!” my little girl exclaimed. “You’re so pretty!”

Paige blushed as she smiled at Kaylyn. “Well, thank you,” Paige replied. “You’re very beautiful, too.”

Kaylyn grinned smugly. “I know,” she said, “but, thank you.”

Paige laughed as she arched an eyebrow at me. “She certainly reminds me of someone.”

I grinned as I wrapped my arm around her waist, tugging her with me towards the porch. “I don’t know what you’re talking about, sunshine,” I replied, playing stupid.

The front door opened again before we could reach it, and my mom burst out of the house. Jimmie leaned against the door frame with his arms crossed over his chest. “Your turn,” he told me.
