Emma

“Emma.” A deep, husky, thoroughly masculine voice pierces through the night. I pivot and inhale sharply at the sight of Kris Knight in all his six-foot tall, brawny, broad chested glory. His devilish dark brown eyes latch onto mine under his umbrella of thick black lashes and for a second, it feels as if I’ve fallen back in time. After searching for him this weekend, and giving up hope, now that Kris is finally standing right in front of me, I’m stunned.

The man is like a fine wine. He’s become even more deliciously handsome with age. “Emma,” he repeats, closing the distance separating us, until his muscular arms and buttery leather, fresh cotton scent, surround me.

“So good to see you,” I mumble against his chest as I slide my hands around his toned waist, feeling the giddiness rush from the top of my head to my toes. Maybe there is a Santa after all.

I shift, so I have an excuse to stare at his gorgeous, chiseled face and look him in the eye. There’s no mistaking the chemistry. It’s still bubbling to a boil between us. “I thought you’d be wearing your Santa suit.”

He tilts his head with a quizzical grin. “I guess my secret’s out.”

“‘Fraid so. I overheard you talking on the phone with Luke at Thanksgiving.”

“I wish he would’ve let me know you were coming. You just saved Christmas.” He chuckles and protectively wraps his arm around me. “Are we staying? Or can I take you to my room and have my way with you?”

I bite back a goofy grin “It might be nice to chat for a little while.”

“If you insist,” he deadpans, and guides me to a table tucked away in a corner. When he helps me take off my coat, his expression changes. His fiery gaze roams over me slowly. Taking all the time in the world, Kris doesn’t hide the fact he’s loving every one of my curves. “You’re more beautiful than ever,” he states as if it’s a fact, no two ways about it.

“Thanks. I was just thinking about how you’ve aged like a fine wine.”

He playfully arches his brows at the compliment and we both take a seat on a small couch. When the server stops by, I stick with champagne. Kris orders a whiskey, and leans in, his dark eyes never leaving mine. “What on earth brings you here tonight? I mean, besides being snowed in with no option to leave?”

“Oh, that. I almost forgot,” I tease, twirling a strand of hair around my finger, trying to come up with a plausible excuse for my sudden appearance and my weekend quest to track him down. How can I tell him the rest of the conversation I overheard—That I’m here to talk him into having a baby with me instead of a surrogate?

“I came up with my parents for an annual Christmas getaway we take with a few other families.”

Kris nods, his penetrating stare locked on mine. “I’m happy you’re here. And to think we’re snowed in together.
