Chapter Eight

Rystar Umara: Town of Kag̈eg̈ Un, Hasfaisp, Painger

“They really went all out for us, didn’t they?” Kyran said as they meandered through the town’s central square.

Long, wooden tables with matching benches had been set out in rows, with festive torches and streamers lining the stone wall that surrounded the square. Atrex, in their chef’s uniforms, darted in and out of the scene to place steaming vats of food and soups on a long table near the edge of the stone wall. A matching table had been set up opposite, drinks lined up and stacked to the sky, Atrex beers, liquors, and other spirits Rystar had never tried before.

“What is this?” Rystar asked, picking up a bottle of bright blue liquid and turning it over in her hands. Vorlara chortled and stepped up to her, taking the bottle carefully from Rystar and popping it open, wafting it under her nose and sighing.

“This is isezhudip, straight from their brewery,” she said, pleased with the smell and grabbing a couple glasses from the table to fill them with a micrometer of liquid in each. Vorlara handed one to Rystar and set the bottle back on the table, lifting her glass in the air. “To Captain Ducote, for saving this dinky little town!”

Rystar held up her glass and tilted her head before furrowing her brow at the small amount of liquid. She shrugged and tossed it back into her throat, feeling a burn, then the cold slither of a snake inching its way into her stomach and setting it on fire. She coughed and set the glass on the table, her head exploding into a thousand tiny points of light.

From in front of her, Cobalt chuckled and looked over to Vorlara. “That was rude.”

“Isezhudip!” she cried, holding her empty glass up to the small crowd of people, who all yelled it back at her and clamored forward for the bottle.

“What the hell does that mean?” Rystar said, blinking furiously and letting a snorting Kyran set her down in a chair. Her head had fused back into one piece, but her vision swam threateningly in front of her.

“‘Fuck you up,’” Cobalt said, taking a chair next to her and sipping on his own glass.

“It certainly did,” Rystar scoffed, holding her head in her hands and taking deep breaths.

“When I was stationed here,” Cobalt began, hissing through his teeth at the drink and setting it down on the table, “it used to be one of our favorite drinking games, especially with these people. Sure, it’s a tiny little mining town, but they knew how to make good food and spirits. And they knew how to party.”

A bang cried out behind them, and they all turned to see the carcass of a large animal fully engulfed in flames and turning on a spit somewhere just outside the wall.

“Looks like they still do,” Cobalt said with a chortle and took another sip of his drink.

“Did I hear someone command isezhudip?”

The Elder Emhan had joined them and held the bottle of blue terror in his hands, raising his eyebrow at them.
