“What the fuck?” An angry shout comes from in front of us.

Looking up, I see Thatcher marching toward us. He’s practically dragging a fumbling Remy behind him, she can hardly keep up. When he reaches us, he drops her hand to grab Saint’s face. Turning it side to side, he inspects it thoroughly before gripping Saint’s chin between his thumb and forefinger, he growls, “What the fuck happened?”

“Nothing,” Saint sneers before he rips his face free from Thatcher’s hold.

“Bull-fucking-shit, asshole, your face looks like you went five rounds with Mike-fucking-Tyson,” Thatcher snaps, anger is pouring out of him. I’ve never seen him this angry before.

“I got jumped, okay? I’m fine.” Saint just lied to his brother … for me.

“Jumped, where?” Thatcher demands.

“Thatch, I’m fine. Don’t worry about it, okay?” Saint pleads, he steps toward me and places his arm around my shoulder. “Rowan patched me up. Nothing is broken.” Thatcher eyes him, not believing a word he says. “Dude, really, I’m fine. Really.”

Thatcher sighs and shakes his head. He knows Saint won’t talk unless he wants to and surprising the hell out of me, he drops it. “Fine, but take it fucking easy.”

Without another word, he grabs Remy’s hand and drags her behind him. She gives me a wave and a doubtful smile, and we watch as they head into Thatch’s room.

When they are out of sight, we hurry toward Saint’s room, but just before we open the door, Reign and Hendrix corner us. “For fuck’s sake, Saint.” Reign shakes his head and then does the same as Thatcher just did and grabs Saint’s face, inspecting it. “Tell me what the fuck happened?” he growls.

“I’m fine,” Saint says with a sigh. “Really, I am, I just got jumped,” Saint snaps at his brother.

“Okay, chill ,man. We’re just worried,” Hendrix states, dropping his hand from Saint’s face. While they were arguing, I grabbed his keys and unlock the door. The two of them follow me in. Reign gives me a worried look, one I’m sure I share, but we are worried for two different reasons. His is out of concern for his brother, whereas mine is for us and the need to keep our secrets secret. Maybe it’s time for him to confide in his brothers? This secret is coming between them and I don’t want to be the cause of that. Saint has already sacrificed so much for me, I won’t have his relationship with his brothers on the line because of me.

“I’ll look after him,” I reassure Reign and that seems to appease him because he just nods and then storms out, slamming the door behind him.

Saint lies down on his bed, stretching his legs out, wincing as he does so. My dad really did a number on him and as someone who has been on the receiving end of a beating like this, I know how he feels.

Not wanting anyone to come barging in, I lock the door and lean against the wood. Then an idea hits me.
