Resourcefulness, Friendship, Humor

“God’s too high; the tsar is too far,” goes a Russian saying. Because most attempts at a dialogue with power end up in Siberia, Russian people try to lead their lives with as little interaction with the state as possible. They rely on their own wits, knowing that with just enough effort, they can turn a stool into a coffee maker and a tractor into a mini power generator. They also rely on each other. In the Gulag, doctors risked their lives by keeping exhausted political prisoners in medical wards so that they could get a brief respite from forced labor. During the Stagnation Period, families of “refuseniks” and dissidents, deprived of the opportunity to work once their convictions became known, found envelopes with money in their mailboxes and packages with clothes on their doorsteps. When pressured to sever ties with dissenters, those who left the envelopes and packages often refused, despite reprisals.
