Chapter 22
Christina led the way towards the tunnel that connected the two buildings, whilst firmly holding on to Jessicaâs hand. Anna brought up the rear, and they were both carrying black sacks as well as their rucksacks full of supplies. They had gathered a good haul of drugs and medical supplies, making Christina much happier with the groupâs medical needs. She wasnât a doctor, but she had spent years in A & E.
âItâs up this corridor and around the next corner. Iâm hoping thereâs nothing in the tunnel. I do not want to get trapped in there,â she said.
Anna nodded silently. As much as it was an immense relief to collect as much of Alexâs medicine as they had, it was clear that Anna would always want more. It was just in her nature. From what Christina had heard about Annaâs antics and what she had witnessed herself, nothing would stop her from chasing anything down that her children needed, no matter the cost to herself.
Christina thought about her baby. The gorgeous little coos and the way she could scream the place down when she was hungry. Her chubby little arms and legs and the softest dark hair. Christina smiled at the thought, then turned to look at Jessica. There was nothing she wouldnât do for her child, and Jessica had lost the people who felt that way about her.
Christina sighed as they hurried towards the turning. We have to become the people that would do anything for Jessica now. The same way we would for Logan. I wonder how many lost children there are still out there.
They turned the corner, and the double doors that led into the tunnel came into view. The small glass panels showed no movement beyond. They wouldnât be able to see the whole walkway, though, as it turned a few yards inside.
âThis is it.â Christina peered through the toughened glass. âNothing appears to be in there, but thereâs no way to tell whatâs around the corner.â She sucked on her teeth. âMaybe this was a bad idea. Iâm getting the same feeling I did when I went to a party wearing boob tube. I just knew something was going to go wrong.â
Anna raised her eyebrows. âAnd did it?â
âThatâs when I got pregnant. Too much confidence was the issue. I should have toned myself down a notch.â
Anna chuckled along with Christina, but then quickly covered her mouth. âLetâs just do it.â
âThatâs your whole motto in life, isnât it? Did you used to wear a lot of sportswear, by any chance, and love to run?â
Anna smirked. âOf course. Although Steve will tell you I was nothing like this a few weeks ago. Irrational fears and anxiety were my main issues. Hated flying and didnât particularly like crowded spaces.â
âHa, no danger of that anymore, is there?â
âNope. A zombie apocalypse can be good for all sorts of reasons.â
Christina turned to face the double doors again and raised her hand to push one side open. She looked down at
