Chapter 22

Christina led the way towards the tunnel that connected the two buildings, whilst firmly holding on to Jessica’s hand. Anna brought up the rear, and they were both carrying black sacks as well as their rucksacks full of supplies. They had gathered a good haul of drugs and medical supplies, making Christina much happier with the group’s medical needs. She wasn’t a doctor, but she had spent years in A & E.

“It’s up this corridor and around the next corner. I’m hoping there’s nothing in the tunnel. I do not want to get trapped in there,” she said.

Anna nodded silently. As much as it was an immense relief to collect as much of Alex’s medicine as they had, it was clear that Anna would always want more. It was just in her nature. From what Christina had heard about Anna’s antics and what she had witnessed herself, nothing would stop her from chasing anything down that her children needed, no matter the cost to herself.

Christina thought about her baby. The gorgeous little coos and the way she could scream the place down when she was hungry. Her chubby little arms and legs and the softest dark hair. Christina smiled at the thought, then turned to look at Jessica. There was nothing she wouldn’t do for her child, and Jessica had lost the people who felt that way about her.

Christina sighed as they hurried towards the turning. We have to become the people that would do anything for Jessica now. The same way we would for Logan. I wonder how many lost children there are still out there.

They turned the corner, and the double doors that led into the tunnel came into view. The small glass panels showed no movement beyond. They wouldn’t be able to see the whole walkway, though, as it turned a few yards inside.

“This is it.” Christina peered through the toughened glass. “Nothing appears to be in there, but there’s no way to tell what’s around the corner.” She sucked on her teeth. “Maybe this was a bad idea. I’m getting the same feeling I did when I went to a party wearing boob tube. I just knew something was going to go wrong.”

Anna raised her eyebrows. “And did it?”

“That’s when I got pregnant. Too much confidence was the issue. I should have toned myself down a notch.”

Anna chuckled along with Christina, but then quickly covered her mouth. “Let’s just do it.”

“That’s your whole motto in life, isn’t it? Did you used to wear a lot of sportswear, by any chance, and love to run?”

Anna smirked. “Of course. Although Steve will tell you I was nothing like this a few weeks ago. Irrational fears and anxiety were my main issues. Hated flying and didn’t particularly like crowded spaces.”

“Ha, no danger of that anymore, is there?”

“Nope. A zombie apocalypse can be good for all sorts of reasons.”

Christina turned to face the double doors again and raised her hand to push one side open. She looked down at
