I hate the winter. But Iâm outside, anyway, freezing my fingers off as I write. At least it isnât snowing. I want to rewrite the ending, but I donât know how. Iâm at the pond, and our tree is still there, the only white birch of the whole bunch. Leaves are all gone, but it still almost glows in the sunlight.

Ronnie closes the book, barely absorbing what Ruth had written. She gently places it under her bed, switches off her lamp, and turns on her side. She is completely exhausted, but she canât sleep. She canât stop thinking about Dakota and Debby. She turns to her other side, pulls the blanket up to her chin, and kicks her legs out. She reaches behind her and adjusts her pillows, taking the one from the bottom and moving it to the top. Annoyance takes over and she tosses off the covers, turns the lamp back on, and sits up. She unplugs her phone and checks her texts â nothing.
Kota, where are you? She presses send, hoping to get a reply, but her phone is silent. She retrieves the diary, opens it back to the entry she read earlier and rereads it, noticing the white birch tree. She wonders if itâs the same tree, the same pond â there are almost a dozen kettle ponds around Kent, so it could be any one of them. As sheâs about to read the next page, her phone vibrates:
Thanks for asking, Kota texts. Ronnie waits for more. Nothing. When sheâs about to type a reply, the phone vibrates again: Iâm home now. Ronnie sighs in relief.
Talk tomorrow? Ronnie asks. Kota sends back a thumbs up. Ronnie sighs, plugs her phone back in, and turns out the light. When she rolls over to her side, she quickly falls asleep, exhaustion finally taking over.
