I didn’t call Troy for two days as I tried to get my head together. I wasn’t sleeping or able to concentrate in class. Studying was out of the question because I would sit there and read paragraphs several times without comprehension.

He texted, called, and even emailed me during that time. It was more communication than I had gotten from him since I got back from LA. I knew he was hurting, but I was too. One afternoon, I waited for Melanie to go to the library for a study group so I could have some privacy when I called him. The phone rang several times, and when it went to voicemail, I hung up. Seconds later, Troy called me back.

“Jenna, please! Let’s talk this out,” he begged. “I’ve been a mess. I haven’t been able to think or work.”

Good. I’d been in the same boat. It was nice to know that he was suffering in the same way.

“I want to talk it out,” I agreed. “But we can’t live like this. I can’t live like this. A man barged into my dorm, trying to talk to me. Security threw him out.”

“I’m sorry. I don’t want you to have to deal with that,” he expressed.

“But I am, and I’m doing it for you because I love you. But I’m not so sure you feel the same way,” I spat,

“How can you say that?” he cried.

“When I see pictures like I did, it tells me that you might have other intentions.”

“I love you more than you know,” he claimed. “I was just blowing off some steam. Those girls wanted to hang out, but I didn’t do anything with them after I kissed that one, I swear. I needed a break. It’s lonely without you.”

“There is also something else we never discussed, and that’s your tour,” I noted.

“It’s in the works, nothing concrete.”

“Yet you have a sponsor, and you’re talking places to perform. Don’t tell me that it’s only in the works,” I snapped.

“We don’t know if we’re going overseas,” he countered. “It might just be North America, and it would be six months. I’m not going to start a discussion about something that might not be.”

“But you’re still going on tour, whether overseas or in the US and Canada.”

“I don’t know what you want me to say here. This is my career,” he growled.

“I know, and I’m trying to understand, but you keep me in the dark, and I don’t like it.”

“I want us to be better,” he tried again. “What can I do to make it better? Please tell me.”

I exhaled loudly. “I love you, Troy, but I feel like we’re growing apart.”

“Does that mean you want to break up? Please don’t say that,” he cried.

“I don’t want to break up any more than you do, but I’m not sure how much more I can stand.”

“I won’t go out. I’ll work and back to my house.”

“You’re going to cut your life off for me? I don’t want you to resent me when you look back.
