Chapter Five

ZAMALEK ISLAND, CAIRO

There was a dark-colored, heavy canvas bag over my head. I couldn’t see anything through it, but I could hear just fine. Arabic was a difficult language to whisper in, thanks to all the harsh letters from deep in the throat, and my assailants weren’t honestly trying too hard to be quiet.

“We have him secured. Now what?” one of the men hissed.

“We find out what he knows and why he was following us,” a second man whispered back firmly. The first man’s Arabic accent was Egyptian, but the second man’s had all sorts of foreign influence in it. He could be il-Saudi, aka Oma Mahmoud, or Arash Sher, the Iranian. I was leaning toward a Farsi accent to the Arabic instead of an Italian, though. It didn’t seem like I had been unconscious long, probably because I hadn’t gotten a full dose of whatever drug had been on that rag.

“That is exactly what we do,” a third man said firmly. The others apparently deferred to him, as they quickly fell silent. He must be Galal Hadi, the leader of the terrorist cell.

I was sitting in a hard chair and my hands were tied behind my back with some sort of thick rope. My training meant my body stayed relaxed as if I were still unconscious as I heard footsteps come closer. I was damned glad my guns and holsters were still in the hotel room where they wouldn’t cause any awkward questions. The hood was yanked abruptly from my head, and a hand slapped me twice across each cheek. They weren’t hard slaps, but they were certainly enough to sting and get my attention. I blinked up at the man hovering over me as if I were groggily waking up. The sudden inclusion of light was stinging my eyes and adding to the illusion, but luckily my eyes adjusted quickly.

I took the time to look around the room and wasn’t surprised by what I saw. It was a one-room apartment that was probably meant to belong to the shop owner of the store below. There were sleeping bags on the cement floor and food wrappers tossed carelessly around. I was sitting in the only chair, and the only other piece of furniture, a small table, was near my right elbow. All six of the terrorists in the cell were in the room, hovering nearby as if I were the greatest show they had seen in a very long time.

Rafi was standing in the corner. He was so haggard his eyes looked like black pits. I could feel his stare even before I located him, and one glance told me everything I needed to know. He was barely holding it together, ready to take on all six men in order to ensure my freedom. He would jeopardize his own life and the lives of millions to get me safely away. To hell with nuclear terrorism. The lines around his mouth were the deepest I had ever seen them, and his lips looked bitten, as if that were all that kept him from begging for my freedom.
