8:11 p.m.
Not exactly the hour of the wolf, but close enough that Keo felt a slight shiver race up and down his spine anyway. Itâd been too long since he was afraid of the dark. Tonight was a very good reminder that, once upon a time, the night was the enemy, and heâd gone far too long not keeping that in mind.
He waited, because there was nothing left to do. It didnât help that he was by himself and the forest had gotten chillier since the last time he sat down to wait. How long ago was that? An hour?
No, it hadnât been more than a few minutes.
Ten minutes, tops.
â¦maybe moreâ¦
He shivered again and pulled his jacket tighter. Christ, what was wrong with him? He was acting like a little boy lost in the woods. Heâd done this before.
But what they were about to do wasnât the problem.
It was the night.
And the lack of silver weapons beside the knife on his left hip.
Despite the AR and the SIG Sauer pistol in its holster, he felt strangelyâ¦unarmed. Even naked. It wasnât a very pleasant feeling.
Goddammit, get your shit together. Youâve done this before.
Yes, he had. It was just thatâ¦
Shut it!
He did, and focused on the task at hand.
Men. On foot and on horseback. They had just appeared in his line of sight like they were supposed to. They were still moving casually, not in any hurry. That was good; slow movers made for easier targets.
First a pair of horses, followed by about a dozen on foot, and then the railcar. Moonlight glinted off the faded red paint.
Whatâs inside that thing?
Again, he thought back to Dannyâs story about the U-Haul. If only he could remember what was inside that thingâ¦
Never mind. Heâd find out eventually. For nowâ¦
He lifted the rifle to take aim.
A figure walked about fifty yards across his iron sights. Not close enough for a confirmed kill shot, but he couldnât ask for a better would-be first victim.
He squeezed the triggerâpop!âthen began pouring lead into the column of men. He didnât know it would be so satisfying shooting at Shakers, and maybe that was why he nearly emptied the entire magazine from the AR before he knew it.
Some of his rounds pinged! off the metal side of the railcar in the middle. He hadnât intended that, but had to admit the sound was music to his ears. He threw a few more rounds in its direction just in case.
Ping-ping-ping!
The car didnât move. The horses dragging it didnât take off like heâd been expecting. Instead, the animals remained still, seemingly unbothered by the sudden chaos. This, even while the other horses in the caravan tried to buck off their riders in fear.
And yet, the four pulling the railcar never moved.
Now thatâs something you donât see every day.
Keo got up and turned to go. Zip-zip-zip! as return fire ripped into the foliage around him. Most of the rounds didnât even come close, because the shooters didnât know where he was or where heâd fired from.
