TWENTY-FOUR

REGINA

It’s been a long day. River vanished; I don’t know where he went, and I don’t have time to worry about it. After getting cleaned up, I had Rich follow along as I made it to all the stores before they closed. Then I rushed back to make a quick dinner for the guys before they got back from their run. I still don’t know why River wasn’t with them, which is another thing I can’t focus on. Griffin arrived at the club right on schedule. We quickly went through all his homework, and now he’s neatly tucked away in bed.

Left to my own devices, I have to comb through the rest of what I found. Locking my door, I sit on the bed and go over all the pictures I took and think I might have enough information to help Margaret with whatever she has up her sleeve. I just hope and pray she doesn’t make things worse or blow the whole arrangement out of the water.

Staring at my phone, I hesitate, not sure whether I should be doing this at all. Part of me wants to see Aiden’s wishes carried out just as badly as Marcus does. But it puts a huge target on this club. A target that will one day be aimed at my son if he becomes the president of the Crescent Kings as planned.

As his mother, I want to protect him. Patched life is already unsafe, but this is a different game. He will have more power than any president of any MC before him. With that much power, he will also have more enemies.

His father was killed because he stepped out of place. Do I really want to risk my son’s life to another man who thinks he is better than us?

I bite my lip, trying to shake off my confusion over what to do. Just having Gabriel Stern as his godfather puts him at risk. I let Marcus convince me it was the right move to let Gabriel teach him about their world while he lives in ours. Respect, Marcus told me, is everything.

Respect is nothing, though, if you’re not alive to receive it.

Staring down at the phone again. I know I have to trust Marcus. I need to trust in Aiden. He wanted this for the club and for our son. It’s all he talked about—Griffin growing up stronger and better than he ever was. And I trust he is looking down, watching over him while Marcus and River protect him here on earth.

So, I press the button for Margaret’s number and pray I’m doing the right thing to make it happen.

“Hello,” Margaret says in a low tone like she was sleeping.

“Damn Margaret, I’m sorry I didn’t realize the time.”

“Hold on. Give me a second. I have to move. Marcus is sleeping,” she whispers.

I wait as my legs bounce up and down.

“Hey, are you still there?”

“You were right,” I jump in, going straight to what I found. “Marcus wants to be the biggest and baddest.
