Deck finally had the boy pup in hand, but the girl was still bounding ahead. And she was getting closer to Father Merrin’s office. Deck instinctively sucked in his breath so he’d stop bellowing for her. All he needed was for Merrin to hear the commotion and come out if he was in his office.

Feeling an uncomfortable stretch in his back, Deck managed to bend and scoop up the girl pup just as she was nearing Merrin’s office door. His ears perked up like puppy ears when he heard Merrin’s voice coming through the door.

“You know, Deck tells me everything. So I know about this ‘evil’ force that you say is out there looking to destroy all of gay humanity. Sounds very melodramatic, but I’ve looked into it.”

There was silence, and Deck concluded Merrin was on the phone.

“I assume someone who’s been around as long as you has some knowledge of this stuff. Ancient texts that have been mostly forgotten because they seem to have no relevance and are considered superstitions of bygone millenniums. Having all these men of various faiths concentrated in this one building and working together to prepare for any kind of darkness, we’ve been able to dig out incredible information about the progression of society, religious beliefs, and the kinds of things that have been pushed into the realms of myth and fiction in an overpopulated modern society. Like what’s happened to you.”

Deck grabbed the girl pup’s snout to stop her from nibbling his chin. He’s talking to Proc!

“I believe in you because I’ve seen you. But I don’t fully trust you. But you have been a help to Comfort Cove. And Jeff told me that when you were living together, you were more scared than scary. And I’ll never forget that it was you who saved my life when that swarm of vampires attacked me in the woods that night. And that you sent someone to find the others and bring them to safety.”

Merrin’s words catapulted Deck back to the final standoff against the vampire invasion that had nearly destroyed the Cove several years before.

“Yeah. I guess I do semi-trust you. I think we can help each other. I’d really like to meet with you and have an in-depth discussion about this ‘Deceiver’ who is our shared enemy.”

He’s totally going behind my back to meet with Proc!

“We both have fears of being alone together. And I most definitely am not asking you to come here. To be honest, I don’t want you here. I’ll wait for the right time, then go on some sort of sabbatical. I’ll come meet you. A place where we both agree we can feel safe. Particularly since you’ll have the upper hand, considering it has to be at night. Can we do that?”

The boy pup whimpered with boredom and tried to squirm out of Deck’s hands, which got the girl pup doing the same thing. Deck faintly heard Merrin whisper, “I’ll call you back.”

Just as Merrin yanked the door open, Deck was placing the girl pup on the floor.
