Chapter 14

Hadrian watched Layla’s broken form from behind iron bars. His eyes fell on the chains around her hands, feet, and wings. The woman needed to journey to the heavens. She could not last much longer here. She had been so close to escaping; why couldn’t she have just left him. Now, here she was in chains again and Hadrian had even less control over her situation than before.

By a stroke of luck—or perhaps a curse—the mask-wearing occultists followed a single entity—Lilith. They acted on the witch’s orders. Which without Lilith’s intervention, the Hell Knights likely would’ve lost the battle. The arrival of the occultists broke what resolve the humans had and allowed the Hell Knights to focus on the angel. Divided, they would have eventually fallen.

Hadrian closed the door behind him, and he eyed the masked man standing guard. He wore a small hammer, and dagger at his waist. “She is not to be touched,” Hadrian said. “Find me if her condition changes.”

The man kept his eyes forward, arms crossed. It was hard to tell if he even heard Hadrian. Most likely, the occultist was refusing to acknowledge Hadrian’s order. These men were Lilith’s, and Lilith’s alone.

Plate creaked, and boots stomped, as Hadrian made his way toward the main hall. The halls were dimly lit with sparse torchlight, and between the dancing shadows on the walls, Hadrian could make out charms that hung from the ceiling, and strange glyphs written in blood. Hadrian could not read the glyphs though. These were the workings of witchcraft and sorcery—a skill mainly used by humans, though their knowledge of the craft was granted from those angels who first rebelled.

As Hadrian wandered the halls, he guessed this had been a human fort at one time, most likely during the old war. The fort had sustained damage that only time could manage. Upon entering the old fortress, Hadrian noticed more than one wall had collapsed on itself, and with the amount of moss covering the stonework, the fortress was nearly unrecognizable from the surrounding trees and undergrowth. It was perfectly hidden. Very few humans would even know of its existence, and with its proximity so close to Starfall, it would be strategic to hold. Perhaps it was not so unlikely that Lilith’s occultists managed to happen upon the Hell Knights.

Hadrian descended a set of stairs into an open chamber with a large dining table. A raven-haired woman sat at the head, drinking from a chalice. She lowered the goblet, her pale lips curling into a smile. She wore a black dress that left little to the imagination. Two strands of fabric stretched over her front, covering the center of her breasts, but widened farther down nearly covering her whole midsection. Her demeanor and presence were seductive, but Hadrian could sense the evil within her. She possessed an aura about her not much different than Asmodeus himself.

“So nice of you to join us, Captain,” she said.

Hadrian bowed in respect knowing the woman’s importance, then he took a seat to her left, next to Nika, and across from Surien.
