Okay, you guessed right. Itâs this shanghai operation theyâve been planning, the three of them, for a long time now. The markâs name is a Mr. Lindner, who lives up in Westchester County but runs some genetic engineering consortium and likes to kick back at the end of the day in La Esqualita and Sallyâs II, drag places in the Forties. He had a little heart problem a few years ago so he canât drink liquor. Smokes a little dope and has been known to pick up âgirlsâ that he takes to the less elegant hotels in the area. Heâs married, natch, with kids, but heâs got a real yen for pre-ops. He absolutely does not like âmen,â so we figured it was cool for Chip and me to check him out one night without getting noticed.
Stanley has been trailing this guy for weeks, so he came with us into La Esqualita, which was packed, since they were just starting the floorshow. The floorshow sucked. Big drags in sequins doing bad lip-sync, but the place looked full of straight people anyway who go ape over any type of drag number because to them itâs like real âtransgressive.â Thatâs a word Sandy Miller kind of infects people with. Anyway, our mark was all by himself at the bar, where it wasnât too crowded, trying to make himself interesting to a Spanish kid with a long black wig and a feather boa and the kind of dress Jackie Kennedy had on in that motorcade. The kid looked glazy bored under all the eye makeup and Lindner, all dolled up in his office suit, wasnât trying too hard. Actually, heâs not a bad-looking guy, kind of like John Cassavetes in Rosemaryâs Baby but a little older and the hair more or less totally gray.
Stanley left us there once we had him spotted. The guy looked pretty quick on his feet, and like I said, he canât drink, so thereâs no chance of getting him shit-face drunk. Anyway, we just wanted to make sure weâd be able to recognize him again. I drank a beer. Chip ordered a brandy and soda and drank two of them down, quick, and I could see he was nervous, just thinking about what we were doing there and what it was leading up to, even though this was only a reconnaissance flight so to speak. I mean I had the thought that weâd already gotten into this to the point of no turning back. Itâs true I havenât given them a yes or a no, but in a way just letting Mavis tell me the whole scam was the same thing as saying yes. Wasnât it? Because, okay, Iâm thinking the whole time about Chip, how heâs incredibly careless about shit and could really fuck the thing up on his own, or like in league with one of his churns from Trix, Fat Paul the moron or what have you, ending up in the federal slammer or wherever they put you for kidnapping.
