In lion form, Adrian padded back to the captainâs cabin. Jocelynâs familiar scent drew him closer, her worry and discomfort clenching low in his belly. Her pain had returned. He feared heâd worsened it by changing without warning her.
You changed into the lion because there was no other choice. Jocelyn spoke in their way, her husky voice soothing. I am proud of what you did for Gabriel. In changing, you also taught me much about your kind, my kind now, Adrian. Thank you for entrusting me with your secrets, your name, your titles, your life.
There was still much to tell her about the plans heâd made with his officers, yet he was pleased that she saw the rightness of his decision to change. Now, he was exhausted and thought it best to let the lion sleep the remainder of the night.
Finding that Jocelyn had left the cabin door ajar, he nudged it with his muzzle and entered. His mate reclined on their bed, the covers pooled around her hips. As he walked, she sat up, resting against the headboard.
Come and join me, my husband, she invited, patting his place on the bed. Iâve missed you and need to know how Gabriel and Ryder are doing.
Steadily, he strode to the bed and leapt onto the mattress. Purring, he fluffed the covers with his big paws, watching himself do it without tearing the silk. Tonight, heâd proven that he could become the lion and not fall prey to his temper or wrath.
Are you aware that youâre giving me your thoughts, Adrian? You donât always do that. Iâm glad youâre doing it tonight. Tell me about the others.
They are fine. Gabriel is still in tiger form and will remain that way for a day or so as his body gets used to the transformation. Ryder received a few scratches. Heâll bathe in tub of hot water and clean them with sustenance. Theyâll heal by sunrise.
Jocelyn surprised him by scooting closer and reaching beneath his mane to scratch his chin. Feeling much like a contented cat, the lion purred louder. Youâre not afraid now that you know how big I really am in this form?
No! Clenching her fingers in his mane, she urged his face around. With confidence she stared, which would have been a challenge if he werenât in control of the lion. I think youâre the most beautiful man Iâve ever known and majestic as you are now. Why havenât you changed back?
Because itâs been ninety-three years and Iâve forgotten how difficult changing form can be. Gabriel must still learn to accept it. I must remind myself that itâs safe to change, that you are safe when I change.
Are you planning to harm me?
He shook his head and buried his worry over how she would feel when she learned he would hand over the evidence heâd gathered against her grandfather to his older brother. Val had the power and position, the title, to ruin a member of the English nobility.
