Joshua had no idea how to respond. Claire’s words sliced into him like a knife, leaving lacerations he wasn’t sure would ever heal. Each one hurt not just because of the obvious self-hatred, not just because her pain was his, but because he’d been responsible for some of it.

He should have seen this. He should have been paying some fucking attention to her and what she needed. He’d been so focused on Amy, on setting up their life, that he hadn’t just stopped and looked at his own mate in the last year.

The baggy clothing, her sleeping in Amy’s room, the way she never undressed in front of them all hit him like a montage of clues he’d missed because he wasn’t paying attention.

His mate thought he wasn’t attracted to her anymore. She’d carried a child for him, bore that child, had given him something he’d given up hoping for, and she thought she was lesser because of it.

She was sure he found her lacking because of it.

The idea was insane, of course, but he’d been so busy and disconnected he hadn’t dispelled it the first fucking time it occurred to her. He hadn’t seen those doubts, hadn’t taken her into his arms and reassured her when he should have.

And because of that, Claire had carried them, like bugs on her skin that bit at her, that burrowed in and tortured her.

She curled in on herself on the couch, shoulders moving in broken sobs. Her wetness was still on his lips, but all he could do was stare at her, lost, unsure how to proceed.

He turned to find the same expressions on his friends’ faces.

They’d all fucked up. They’d all been distracted that they’d let her pull away instead of doing the hard work together.

And she’d paid the price…

Sure, Joshua had been horny. He’d been suffering a case of blue balls that would make any man groan, but it hadn’t been the same. He’d been waiting, figuring they’d eventually hit a good point, that they’d find their footing, always sure that things would work out.

His mate had been sure they’d leave her, that they didn’t want her, that she was ruined and was just biding time until they walked out on her.

And damn, that was far more painful than he’d ever expected. It took him back to the start, when she hadn’t trusted them, then worse when she’d discovered they’d lied to her. She’d pulled away, shut down entirely as if she’d had no idea how to move forward. That had killed him, to see that sort of pain, but it was nothing compared to this.

This was so much worse because they knew each other, loved each other, and still she’d suffered without them even realizing it.

Joshua looked to Kaidan, to the one who always had the answers when it came to making this sort of thing better. Bryce and Joshua had the emotional intelligence of seashells, but Kaidan was better. He had to know how to fix it.

His lips were pressed together as he stared, as if trying to figure out a plan forward.
