Chapter 15

“I work for Kai Warcloud,” she told him. “He’s got some unfinished business with Moreau. I’m here to make sure that gets resolved face-to-face.”

“What exactly do you mean by unfinished business?” Gael continued, trying to lead her down the path of explanations.

That was a can of worms she was definitely not opening. “Their dealings, business or otherwise, are not for me to know. I’m just a bounty hunter,” Rebel replied. “But I’m aware you won’t just hand him over, so I’m here to offer a trade.”

“While I find your self-confidence tantalizing, I cannot imagine what you have to trade that would induce me to release my progeny to your care,” he told her frankly, sipping his bourbon.

“I told you what I was when we last met,” Rebel murmured.

“A Raven Mocker, yes,” Gael replied, nodding. “A rare and powerful being among your people— and a known trickster,” he added with significance.

“On occasion,” she admitted. “But one of my gifts is the ability to commune with the spirits. They come to me of their own volition.”

“I can’t tell if this is informational or a point of threat,” Gael remarked drily.

“Both,” she admitted, thanking the waiter as he delivered her entree. It smelled heavenly. She took a deep breath in, mouth watering.

Rebel sliced into the Boudin, adding a smidgen of southern cooked greens and beer-braised onions to the form before she bit into it.

“Oh, God, that’s good,” she groaned breathlessly, enjoying the succulent, lightly smoked, meltingly hot flavor. She closed her eyes a moment, savoring until she heard Gael laughing quietly beside her.

Gael shot her a triumphant look. “I told you you’d like it.”

“What can I say? I’m temptable.”

“I like that quality in a woman,” Gael replied with a sexy look.

Despite his smolder, she found herself laughing, genuinely enjoying their back-and-forth. Sébastien Gael may be the Vampire Master of New Orleans, but he was also a helluva charming rascal. She never thought she’d find that so appealing in a man.

Defiant, she cut a second piece and offered it to him on the edge of her fork. “Want a bite?”

His gaze didn’t stray from her face. “Of you or the Boudin?”

“I’m not on the table,” she pointed out, fork inches from his face.

“Yet,” he amended, though it sounded more like a promise. To her great surprise, he leaned forward and bit the sausage with even white teeth, not a fang in sight. She wondered how that worked if they dropped down and retracted at will.

He chewed and swallowed, nodding in satisfaction. “Danielle does it as good as her mother did, God rest her soul.” He made the Catholic sign of the cross, and Rebel wondered briefly if he would burst into flames.

“Ironic coming from a vampire, don’t you think?” she couldn’t help but point out when he remained whole and unharmed beside her.

Gael titled his head in askance. “How so?”

“How many souls do you think you’ve sent to the next place, give or take a dozen?”

“Far too many in my youth, I’d be remiss not to admit,” he answered.
