âWOULD YOU like to take a wild guess what my big assignment is today?â Portia asked.
Rourke crossed his arms over his chest to keep from reaching for her. What he wouldnât give for five minutes of uninterrupted privacy so he could greet her the way he wanted to, with a thorough kiss. What the hell? Why not go for broke? A proper good morning would include losing their clothes and discovering one another.
Ah, but he was supposed to be guessing todayâs mission. He knew what he wished her assignment was. âLetâs see, youâre supposed to make sure my every need is met and youâre here to pick up that list.â
It felt good to flirt with her even if he knew he shouldnât. He wanted to position himself in front of the camera and announce to the world at large that she was his and he was going to do his damnedest to make her think of him as hers.
Portia twirled her pen between two fingers. âBetter than that.â
They didnât exactly have the privacy he craved, but no one else was around. He looked at her, letting her see just how much he wanted her again. âHoney, it couldnât get any better than that.â
Aside from an answering flicker of heat in her eyes, she ignored his comment. âLauchmann informed me youâve bagged someone. He knows because he paid the maids to snoop through your garbage. They narked on the condom wrappers.â
âYouâre kidding. No, youâre not kidding. Heâs going through my garbage?â Rourke wasnât sure whether he was more amused or annoyed.
âNot personally. But, yes, heâs having your garbage sifted through.â Portia rubbed her hand over her forehead as if warding off an impending headache. âI should have thought about the garbage.â
All his good humor evaporated. This felt sordid. No way in hell Portia knew that was going on, but he hated she was even involved with a company that ran such a seedy show. âHave you ever considered a career change? You have too much integrity for this,â Rourke said.
Her head snapped around. âMost of the time I really like my job, and for the most part it doesnât compromise my integrity,â Portia said. âAnd speaking of integrity, you are the one who signed up for this show, not me. When they pay you the kind of money theyâre paying you to be here, I suppose they figure they own your garbage as well.â
Heâd pissed her off. He ran a hand over his hair, silently counting to ten, because, damn it, her jibe had hit home. Increasingly, he felt like a high-rent gigolo.
âDid he give you any indication he suspected us?â
âThank God, no. I doubt Iâd be here now.â
He thought she was overreactingâHollywood wasnât exactly puritanical in its outlook. âI canât imagine sleeping with me would ruin your career. Iâm sure itâs not the first time itâs happened.â
She recoiled as if heâd struck her, and he realized how his words had sounded.
âNot you, honey. I didnât mean itâs happened with you before.
