Technique Moment

As you start to inhale, you may notice that you want to pull the abdominals in at the same time. We are erroneously taught to hold in our stomachs as we breathe in, which is incorrect. If you have trouble finding your natural breathing pattern, watch someone while they sleep. You will see that the natural pattern of breathing is to expand the abdomen as you inhale, and soften or pull in the abdomen as you exhale.

I cannot stress enough the importance of proper breathing techniques—breath is the key to life. We are increasing the awareness first, then working the muscles for support. But don’t get discouraged if proper breathing techniques take a while to master. The natural rhythm is already within you. You may not have used it for some time, but this exercise will begin to get you back in touch with your breath and your body.

Once you have become more aware of your abdominals, you will no longer need to place your hands on your abdomen to perform this exercise, and you’ll see that it can be performed anywhere! Ordinary moments such as driving or sitting at the desk or table are wonderful opportunities to work your abs.

Women who have had a cesarean section or other abdominal surgery may find it takes a little longer to master this exercise because scar tissue can inhibit some of the sensitivity in the abdominal region. Be patient and gentle with yourself—with practice and dedication you will soon feel the effects of stimulating your abdominal muscles.

The Breathing for Me Technique can also be done on the floor. Simply follow the directions above while lying on the floor in the position shown on page 50.
