Psycho City

Trudy and Phil ordered carry-out in the turnpike island restaurant and got back in the Trans Am.

“When I was a kid,” Phil said, before he started the engine, “we stopped here and had to sit down in the restaurant to eat. No carry out. It was a big deal restaurant. People came here for special occasions, when it was new. About the only other thing I remember is that they told me Wilt Chamberlain built the turnpike.”

“Who?”

“Famous basketball player, once upon a time.”

“Wait! Wasn’t he the tall dude in Conan the Destroyer?” She gestured at her T-shirt.

“Yeah!”

“How could he have built the Kansas Turnpike?”

“He played ball for KU, University of Kansas, the Jayhawks, up the road in Lawrence.”

“So?”

“People paid the toll on this road, after it was built, to get there faster to see him play.”

“And the tolls helped pay for this fucking road?”

“Yeah.”

“Okay. I’m set to play Kansas trivia with the big boys, now.”

Phil turned the key in the ignition. The Trans Am’s healthy engine rumbled to life.

Trudy started on her hamburger.

Phil drove to the turnpike service station near the restaurant and put in gas. Then they rejoined the four lane turnpike and headed north once more.

“Next stop, Wichita,” Phil announced, seeing a mileage sign. “Should be there in a half-hour or so. Want to stop for the night? Get a motel?”

“Sounds good to me.”

“When you going to tell me about what you read today?” Phil asked around a mouthful of hamburger. “Want to wait until we’re in the motel?” Steering one-handed, he fumbled with his fries then stuffed several in his mouth.

Trudy swallowed her last bite of hamburger and said, “Might as well tell you now. No reason to wait. Actually, after reading several of those books, the basics are pretty much what you heard Liz tell me in the playroom. The Countess tortured young women and bathed in their blood. Well, to be fair, one book pointed out that there’s no actual evidence for the blood bathing. It is not mentioned in the trial records. But what Liz didn’t tell me was how Erzsebet died.”

“They executed her?”

“No. After Darvulia’s death, another supposed sorceress advised her to switch from peasants to nobles. Their blood would be richer.”

“You’re kidding.”

“No. It was a long time ago.”

“No shit.”

“Anyway, Erzsebet was so strung out by then that she took the advice. The authorities had to do something when the complaints about missing girls came from aristocrats instead of peasants.”

“No one cared if she killed peasants?”

“Only the peasants.”

“Who didn’t count.”

“Not to the authorities, I guess. It was—”

“A long time ago,” he finished, “in a galaxy far, far away.”

“Wrong movie.”

“Yeah, but they should make a movie about Erzsebet. Wow.”

“They have. You’ve never seen one? Horror movie guy that you are?”

He shrugged and stuffed more fries in his mouth. “Don’t remember one.”

“Several are listed in one of these books. I’ll show you, later. But back to history, Erzsebet was not executed, but she was imprisoned, in her own bedroom. The door and the windows were bricked up except for slits at the tops of the windows for air and a food hole in the door.
