Zombies Strike the Beach
I knew when Star asked me to dinner that it was work related, but as we sat talking, I was in no hurry to ask her what the case was. When we went out to eat it was never any place that one would call fancy, but the food in Ma and Pa restaurants was always second to none. It was as if they had mastered something lost on most cooks, home cooked taste.
I had steak and eggs; Star had raw vegetables. I think the greatness of a place like this is lost if you have never tasted anything they cooked, but to each their own.
In our time apart, she had been to a small town near the Cape called Coco. She was busy telling me all about the beautiful beaches and how, even during the day, they were relatively free from the throngs of people who normally visit these places.
It sounded to me like my kind of beach, no people, no horrible Speedos passing by to hurt your eyes.
When she was done, or so I thought, I told her about the haunted vacation. Even though she laughed in all the right places, she still seemed upset by my reaction.
“Really, after feeling what you did, why would you want to write such a nasty article?”
“They were deceptive. It was a moral call.”
She looked at me as if to say, ‘Mike, you and I both know that you don’t have morals.’
I don’t think that is really a fair judgment of character. I have strong opinions and don’t mind telling people they are full of shit. I hardly think that makes me lack morals. In fact, I would tend to think that my honesty gives me an advantage on most people in the moral department. I didn’t push the issue. I decided to enjoy her company.
It wasn’t until after we ate that she took on that serious business look and tone. “This is going to be a hard case.”
“Nothing we can’t handle,” I said and smiled.
“I’m not sure what you know about Voodoo, but it really shouldn’t be taken lightly.”
I furrowed my brows. “What exactly are we talking about here?”
“Zombies.”
She said the word; I heard the word, and yet the only thing my body did in response was laugh. I am not talking about a chuckle. I am referring to the type of laughing that feels like exercise. The kind that each time you think you are finished it starts again. Had anything been in my mouth, it would have shot out of my nose. My ribs started hurting and my eyes were watering. I could see that she was getting more irritated with each second and I wanted to stop laughing, honestly, but I just couldn’t.
I think as she stood and walked out she called me a name like ‘butthole,’ only not so nice. I deserved it.
I got up, still laughing and followed her outside.
She was already getting in her car so I straightened up as much as I could and walked over.
