Behavior over time

Lots of systems data represent conditions that change as a function of time. The formal field of Systems Dynamics uses a tool called behavior over time graphs that captures trends in data. These graphs also allow interactions to be viewed to determine if changes in inputs result in direct or indirect proportional changes to outputs, as well as the magnitude of change recorded. This type of analysis assigns causality from the input parameters to the output. A quick glance at Figure 5-20 can allow the incorrect conclusion to be formed that increase sales of ice cream results in more shark attacks. While the data are strongly correlated, logic tells us this is not causation. Also, Shark Week on the Discovery Channel would have had an episode about this if it was true.

Figure 5-20. Eating ice cream promotes shark attacks!
