Chapter 15

The midday sun warmed the air and kissed at my freckled arms as my mother and I walked through the town. The sky was blue and cloudless stretching far beyond the Black Mountains towering above the treeline. Though there was no breeze, I felt a chill at the memory of Malkar’s torture within those jagged rocks. I suddenly remembered the evil man’s words to me. “He knew,” I whispered under my breath and looked at my mother walking ahead of me. “My blood betrayed me in the end.”

“Did you say something?”

“Nothing,” I said quickly. I did not want to burden her with the knowledge that her daughter had been kidnapped by an evil sorcerer and was lucky to even be alive. We reached the edge of the Forgotten Forest and I looked back one last time at my humble village. My father’s memory and hard work stood alone against the bland fields and sparse grouping of skimpy trees. My mother hunched behind a large boulder and began looking around wild eyed. “What are you doing?” I asked.

“Well, do you want to get there before sundown?” she responded. Small ripples of dark brown bubbled across her bare skinned arms and legs. I could see her bones shift and stretch beneath her slender features. I winced, remembering the pain, and looked away. “Hazel,” she said. “It only hurts the first time.”

I looked at her again. She was partially on all fours behind the large stone curtain. Though her face had extended into a long muzzle, I could see a joyous and calm smile. After a few more moments, she stepped away from her hiding place a tall elegant mare. I awed at her beautiful muscled body. Her fur was dark brown and ticked with specks of grey like her human hair. I traced my eyes along her thick neck and down her swayback, watching as the sun sparkled against her velvet fur in waves of warm light. The mare approached me gracefully and I had to tilt my head back to see her green eyes.

“How do I do it?” I gasped. She simply placed her long nose on my back and nudged me towards the giant rock.

“Just think about being a horse again.” She said and stared impatiently at me.

I closed my eyes and tried to imagine myself as a horse again. A wave of calm washed over me when I pictured my black hooves and long red legs. I felt my tangled curly mane brush against my large round cheeks and the wind tickle at the whiskers at the end of my extended snout. I could feel the pressure of my bones rapidly changing beneath my skin, but there was no pain. My hearing shifted and my elongating ears swiveled atop my head listening to all of the sounds around me.

I opened my eyes when the changing stopped and glanced at the world surrounding me. There was less color, and nature seemed stretched. I had been so panicked the last time I changed that I could not stop and appreciate the simple beauty of everything.
