Chapter Sixteen

“Still no response.”

Lee had rapped on the door long and hard, Tom Witcher proving as elusive as ever.

“You know,” said Ness, “considering he wrote the same words as the man we met here said, that threat or warning or whatever it was, I’m beginning to think they’re one and the same.”

“Do you think Witcher’s gone missing too?” Presley’s dark eyes were full of agitation.

“Let’s not jump to conclusions.” Lee had issued a warning of his own but not one that held any weight with the rest of them. Sensing this well enough, he dug out his mobile.

“What are you doing?” asked Ness.

“It’s abundantly clear we need to talk to Tom Witcher concerning Corinna and get an idea what he looks like too. The case officer can possibly get that from the Passport Office or the DVLA, but, Ness, that doesn’t mean it’ll be shared with you or even me, for a whole host of legal reasons. What I can do, though, is dispatch a couple of officers round to his Brighton address.”

“But he rents this cottage,” Presley pointed out.

“Doesn’t mean he doesn’t have a second home,” Lee reasoned. “Look, we give it a go. It might be he doesn’t have a connection to the Brighton address anymore. We’ll have to see.”

“What about this house?” Presley said, taking a deep breath and squaring his shoulders. “Corinna could be in there, imprisoned. And that’s why he’s not answering his door.”

As she’d done in the pub, Ness reached out a calming hand. “If she was in there, she’d have let us know somehow. Her…energy wouldn’t be faint; it would be strong.”

Whilst Lee stepped aside to make his phone call, Theo elaborated on Ness’s words. “It’s not in any doubt anymore, not in our minds, at least, that this house and/or Tom Witcher is connected with Corinna’s disappearance in some way.”

“Then we have to get in there—”

“We will,” she assured him. “We are. As soon as Lee’s off the phone.”

A few minutes later, Lee was back, his request having been acted upon.

“We’ve got to get in there,” Presley reiterated, again looking for all the world as if he was going to break down the door to Low Cottage in spite of how sturdy it looked.

Lee was agitated about the situation and began to pace. Gradually he came to a halt, his gaze on Theo. “Earlier, you said you saw Corinna inside Low Cottage.”

“I thought I saw a figure that resembled Corinna but not necessarily a physical—”

“I’ll ask you again. Are you officially telling me, a police officer, that you saw Corinna, the missing person, inside this house?”

Clearly, Theo now realised what she was being asked. “Yes,” she answered. “I did.”

He approached the front door again and resumed knocking on it, announcing very clearly it was the police at the door and to open up. As quickly as he’d begun, he stopped, telling them to follow him as he took off round the path to the back of the house.

“Where are we going?” Ness asked him.
