Chapter 9

“You intend to bring those sick bastards onto my land?” Marshal gave Dooley a glare that would have stripped the hide off a lesser man, but Dooley met his laser intensity with folksy, down-home charm.

“Hear me out.” Dooley lifted his hand to Marshal.

“I’m willing to listen.” Cody let go of Billy and settled at the table.

Billy joined him feeling more and more impressed with his mate. Each minute they spent together, Cody was maturing by leaps and bounds. Gone was his bright-eyed, blinky innocence. He would never be a shrewd gambler with an impeccable poker face, but Cody was becoming a man who could hold his own. For the first time, Billy genuinely admired him and didn’t feel he was abandoning a defenseless man in order to clear his name. Too, what Cody said in the bedroom helped to ease Billy’s conscience. Obviously, Cody intuitively understood that Billy had to turn himself in not only because that’s the kind of man he was, but because then they could have the kind of life they wanted to have. Together. As partners.

“If there is a tracking device that they followed, then we can lure them out here.” Dooley pointed to the table.

“For what reason?” Marshal asked.

“I’m thinking we toss that son of a bitch in a cage and get some answers.” Storm settled next to Dooley, his intention with the nameless, faceless man who had hurt one of his own pretty clear.

“You’re talking about illegal detainment.” Jake sighed and stood up. “Forgive me, but this is exactly the kind of talk that I shouldn’t be hearing since I’m an attorney.”

“I hardly think we have to worry about violating his civil rights after what he did to Cody.” Storm crossed his arms and glared at Jake.

“Hey, hold up, Captain Red-Hot Pokers.” Dooley grasped Storm’s arm. “I’m not talking about tossing him in a cell and beating the shit out of him. That’s crazy.”

“Right. You never get good information out of a torture victim anyway.” Billy added his two cents. “Not that I personally wouldn’t like to kick the living shit out of him, but as a former deputy, I learned in the academy that torture really isn’t an effective way to get facts out of someone.”

“I’ve heard that,” Cassidy said, pouring more coffee for those whose cups were empty. “They will say whatever they think you want to hear just to get the pain to stop.”

“For the record I wasn’t talking about torture. Not exactly. Maybe withholding basic needs.” Storm considered the men at the table. “Nothing deadly.”

“I really don’t think I should hear this.” Jake waved off any more coffee. “Come on, Billy. Let’s go talk strategy.”

“Hey, no. You don’t have to go with me.”

“I’m not planning on it.” Jake grinned when Billy’s eyebrows rose. “But I’m thinking I can help you go over what you’re going to say.”

“I appreciate it, but I don’t want to miss out on this conversation where they’re speculating about using Cody as bait.”

“I can listen and tell you.
