CHAPTER 2

Back into the night.

After seeing Emma to our hotel, I journeyed out to meet the stranger.

I felt like a new boy. A new man. I'd seen a world of possibility. Not only had I seen it, I'd felt it. Just a sneak preview of coming attractions.

I caressed my fingers against my lips, a phantom sensation of when that stranger's mouth overpowered mine with his possessive kiss. He'd marked me. I belonged to him now. With a tingle of anticipation, I marched on willingly to his lair.

The entrance to this super secret sex club—I mean, spa—was in the middle of an alley. If you blinked, you'd miss it. And that was assuming you'd be brave enough to wander down the darkened labyrinth in the first place.

I'd returned to the same darkness from which I came. The illuminating street lamps faded into the distance. Now all I could hear was the crunch of my footsteps against gravel.

I was sensing a theme about Hollywood. Everything was glitz and glamour on the surface, offering a shiny exterior to lure you under its spell. But something darker stirred under the waters, ready to swallow you up. I hoped it was in this darkness that I'd find my truth. It was hard to resist the temptation of something so wicked.

There was no sign on the door to reveal the business name. No affirming robotic voice on my phone's GPS to announce: "You have arrived." Only a long brick building that looked like an abandoned warehouse. But as I inched closer, the vibration of house music tipped me off that this was indeed the destination I was seeking.

An oversized security door with iron bars seemed to be the only way in. I noted the glowing white ring of the video cam doorbell. It was a strangely modern detail amidst an industrial backdrop.

Before I could put my finger on the button, a garbled voice barked at me through the doorbell's speaker. "Show me your ID, kid."

I blinked at the obtrusive demand, dug my driver's license out of my back pocket, and held it up to the camera's eye. There was a loud buzz, then a large slab of steel groaned open behind the security door.

"You coming or going?" a voice asked from inside.

I turned the rusted brass knob and opened the security door, peering at a never-ending tunnel of more darkness. A short, stocky woman with a shaved head stepped aside so I could see her. "Well?"

"Hi," I said, fumbling my license back into my pocket.

"Hi," the woman said, mocking me in a high-pitched tone. She shut the door hard and turned the lock, then walked away cackling. "Fresh chum for the sharks."

It wasn't too late to turn back. I could return to the safety of my hotel room. Go back to a world where everything was dull and predictable. Go back to...the same life I was desperate to escape.

No, I was determined to do this. When I'd heard the drama club was taking a trip to L.
