The Promposal

Dominique

We had gathered in Miss Romani's office for the final promposal planning session on a Thursday afternoon after classes. The fluorescent light cast a bright glow on everything, but flickered occasionally. Mrs. Devereaux sat calmly in Miss Romani's desk chair while Miss Romani leaned on the front edge of her desk. Mrs. Devereaux wore a floral print sundress, and Miss Romani wore a blue pencil skirt with a white button up blouse. Between those two women, I felt under-dressed in blue jeans and a Jimi Hendrix t-shirt.

Rodrigo paced while I occupied the lone chair. We had helped Rodrigo plan this for a week. Thank goodness too. Rodrigo wanted to ask her out with a boom box held over his head blaring “In Your Eyes” like he was John Cusack in Say Anything. We all agreed it was bold, but we all agreed she might not even come to the window to see.

Mrs. Devereaux, the most romantic of our trio, suggested that the proposal needed to be in front of an audience to improve its effect. Miss Romani had suggested that the assembly for the baseball players on Friday, tomorrow, would fit the bill and was soon enough to still plan for prom. I had come up with the idea for the signs. Rodrigo thought of a few twists, but mostly just worried and fretted.

I honestly hoped that the idea would be too much for Rodrigo and by heaping on as much hoopla as possible, that he could not go through with it. He had agreed though and even though he paced now, my heart fell knowing he would go through with it.

“Is the sign taken care of?” Rodrigo asked.

“Yes. The entire French Club is on board,” Mrs. Devereaux answered.

“How do you think Mr. Thompson will react?” he asked.

“He will be pissed,” I said.

“But he will be fine with it,” Miss Romani countered. She narrowed her eyes at me.

“I'll make sure he's fine with it,” the French teacher added.

“I don't want to get expelled,” Rodrigo said.

“You won't,” the teacher and the librarian said simultaneously.

“Should I get flowers? Roses maybe? Crap, I don't know what her favorite flowers are.”

“If you want to get flowers, get a single red rose, Rodrigo. Give that to her along with the card,” the teacher said. I hated to admit it, but she seemed to have the smartest ideas.

“Everything will be fine. She will say yes,” the librarian added.

“What about Hector? He will come after me.”

“He won't risk it. He wants his scholarship,” I said. I could have played on his fears, but honestly, I didn't think Hector would do anything. He may steam. He may get mad, but he won't do anything. At least I hoped not.

If he did, my plans for revenge would be much more elaborate than our work on Rodrigo's promposal.

“If he does, I have a plan. Just keep your head about you and run out the west doors,” Miss Romani added.

“Go home, Rodrigo. Get some sleep,” Mrs. Devereaux said as she stood up.
