7.2 MATLAB Memory Storage

MATLAB stores data in column-major order, that is, the elements of same column are stored in consecutive memory spaces. Consider a matrix A shown here:

>> A = [1 2; 3 4; 5 6];

MATLAB stores the elements of A as shown in Figure 7.1.

The A matrix can be accessed in a 1-D manner also. For example, if you want to access the third element from the beginning of the array, type the following at the command prompt:

> A(3) ans = 5

From Figure 7.1, it can be seen that the third element has value 5. This has implications in writing code. Consider Example 7.1.
