Behaviour management

Introduction

3 September 2003 — The class were rioting — climbing walls, escaping through the windows and generally being very rowdy. My frantic appeals for order died unheeded and I ended up hunched on the floor in the middle of the classroom, weeping, while the little darlings mocked me.

Thankfully this was only a dream — the same one I have every year before returning to school after the summer break. It is rooted only in my subconscious and has never been a reality.

Effective behaviour management is essential for the smooth running of your classroom. Bearing this in mind, it has not always been high on the agenda in teacher training institutions. The advice I remember being given was limited — there was one lesson observation feedback form that read ‘Try to avoid using sarcasm and the temptation to shout’. There was also the cynical pensioner who told us, with alarming regularity, not to smile until Christmas. I am sure this is no longer the case, but behaviour management is still an issue that concerns all teachers, not just those new to the profession.
