CHAPTER 13

January 19, Evening

Southern England

Stonetree Prison

Invisible and second-guessing herself, Red huddled in the back of the delivery truck and spied over the stacked boxes to see out the windshield. She must’ve been the first person ever to want to break into prison.

The vehicle stopped at the same barn that had welcomed her to Stonetree. Rustic on the outside, the barn looked like a guard station inside. A female guard stood at the opening and waved. She opened the rear door of the truck, peering directly at Red without seeing her. “Bernie! Back so soon?”

The delivery driver twisted in his seat to reply, “More from the alchemists. Security inspected it outside.”

“Move on then,” the guard said, pushing the back door closed, but the latch didn’t click. She didn’t seem to notice, and her footsteps marked her retreat. “Have a cuppa with me before you leave, Bernie.”

“Will do, Gemma.”

Red hung on as the driver drove slowly inside the barn. The rear door flopped open as they descended into a subterranean paved tunnel that could fit an eighteen-wheeler. She jumped down when the truck stopped in a loading bay and jogged to an elevator as uniformed staff unloaded the delivery. Fishing Colin’s ID badge from her bra, she waited until no one was looking at her and quickly tapped the badge on the elevator’s entry scanner. The blinking white lights on the scanner switched to a negative solid red. She re-hid the badge before anyone noticed it appearing to float in midair.

Crap, this elevator must require higher clearance than she’d stolen. It made sense. The delivery door was a clear shot to freedom if a prisoner made it here. Had she wasted the stolen ID? If it was flagged in the system for unauthorized access, it was useless. Unless they’d already revoked it because he was released.

She crossed her fingers for a slow bureaucratic process.

Heather had disabled her collar but warned that a spell could trigger the prison wards. Magic was the last resort. Red would wait until she was close to the warlock to use her power. She had to make tonight’s invisibility worth it for Kristoff’s sake.

That was if she could do it before Stace threw her life away and joined her in prison.

One of the staffers broke away from the others and walked to a nearby closed stairwell. He pressed his smartwatch against a sensor over the doorknob. Red crept behind him, careful not to touch him as he went through the door. He trotted down the stairs. She stayed at the top landing, listening to his footsteps fade.

The warlock was held in solitary on the lowest level of the prison. She’d beaten him in a fistfight. As a hybrid, she should be stronger than a human. She would test the theory when she grabbed the keys to Maxwell’s cell from his guard. Racing to the bottom of the stairs, she tapped her stolen ID badge on the scanner by the door. A light blinked on the scanner for a long moment before turning green.
