Chapter 13

Sunny

There was nothing to be said for the radical disappointment. The heavy, sinking feeling of defeat settled over all three of us like ash on a forest floor after a wildfire. None of us wanted to acknowledge the immediate, painful depletion of the hope we’d been doing our best to keep alive, and none of us wanted to be the first to break the silence. None of us had answers for what came next, what could have gone wrong, or how to prepare for breaking the news to the others that our singular lead was nothing but a dead end. We’d learned nothing new and, in fact, only had more questions without answers.

Like, why was Callista’s storage unit where my power had decided to drop us? Could it truly have been just a fluke? And what of the mirror puzzle? And the locked jewelry case? Was it possible that someone else found the broken piece of Stone before us? Were we just too late?

There had been so many clues and coincidences that perhaps I had allowed myself to become too confident. I’d flown too close to the sun, and the fall back to Earth was so much worse than I could have ever imagined.

“I could have sworn…” I muttered, allowing my words to trail off before I finished the thought. I was speaking mostly to myself, anyway. Without another word, I tossed Baron’s pillow to the side, leaned forward, and snatched the box from Slade’s lap. I turned the case in every direction and ran my hand along the inside—plush, deep bluish-purple velvet lined and perfect for holding something breakable of great value—but all I felt was the bottom of the case. “I don’t understand.”

There was still a radiating feeling of power and comforting magic in the box. So much about the vessel felt right, and my mind started to spiral as I replayed over and over every step we had taken since arriving in the storage unit. What had we missed? What had I missed?

“Give it here, please,” Baron’s voice demanded. The intensity of it pulled me away from my repeating, panicking thoughts. I felt his hand gently resting on my shoulder and saw he had one hand on the box as he was trying to pry it away from me with a firm but gentle insistence.

I released the empty box from my hands but kept my gaze locked onto it as Baron placed it politely on his side table and closed the lid.

“I’m sorry for getting a tone.” He sighed as he sat on my opposite side. “I could just tell you weren’t really hearing me the first couple of times I asked.”

“You definitely didn’t,” Slade said from his same seat. “You had that look in your eye that said you were a thousand miles away.”

I blinked hard and rearranged myself so I was no longer frantically kneeling on the center of the bed but sitting with my legs over the side of the mattress between my mates.
