DELILAH BROKE THE SILENCE. “Bullshit,” she called. “Oonuh duh bad mout’—”

“Remember, Delilah, English, please. Let’s ask the good doctor what he thinks about it,” Miss Lizzie replied.

“Don’t, Elizabeth,” said Pearl.

Beryl lit another cigarette, sipped her drink, regarded the scene. “She’s right. You ought to be quiet.”

“I won’t,” hissed Miss Lizzie. “He knows what those circles represent, even if he wouldn’t say so in his article. Isn’t that right, Doctor Van Vierlans? Those stones represent the Guale who are buried there—thirteen in each circle, one each to represent our Savior’s disciples and one for Jesus himself.”

“You’re talking crazy now, Elizabeth. Crazy, or whisky—it doesn’t matter,” said Delilah. “You’re wrong. I don’t know who the ‘wally’ are, but those are our people out there. They—”

“Are not yours,” Miss Lizzie cut her off.

Delilah’s mouth twisted. “But I read it in Mister Peter’s journal. He wrote Gullah—I saw it myself.”

“This one?” Miss Lizzie reached into the wall of books and pulled out a small, cracked, maroon leather journal with an insignia in flaking gold leaf at the bottom right corner. He made out a decayed “PM.”

“You may have read it in his substandard penmanship, but you never heard him speak it. You would’ve known right away if he did because what he wrote was Guale. Here—see for yourself.” Miss Lizzie offered the little tome.

Delilah snatched it out of her hand. Pearl and Beryl got up and stood over her shoulder as she turned the pages. Apparently, they had read it before tonight as well.

Delilah flipped through the pages. She soon found the passage and read aloud:
