Playing games in the hot afternoon sun tired everyone out. Dad brought two bowls of water for Poppy and Samson and then he and the children went inside to eat their lunch.

Poppy lay in the shade of the barn and looked at the cottage. The front door was open and the hallway looked invitingly cool, but she was happy lying in the shade next to her new friend.

While Samson slept, she wondered about Mom and Pup. She hadn’t noticed them leave the cottage so she guessed they were still inside. Perhaps she should go in and see how the little one was?

The moment Poppy stirred, Samson opened one eye.

‘I’m going to see how Pup is,’ she explained.

‘Carol has driven them to the vets,’ Samson growled. ‘I saw them leave earlier.’

‘I hope she’ll be all right.’

‘She’ll be OK. It’s better than fending for herself in the wood.’

‘Samson, what’s a microchip?’ This was something that had niggled Poppy since hearing the word mentioned in the wood.

‘It’s like a tag that’s injected into us. It holds our owner’s details, so if we get lost, our families can be traced. Both you and I have one. You probably don’t remember because you’d have been very young.’

Poppy looked at Samson. She liked the way he calmed her down with his knowledge, confidence and common sense.

‘Did you enjoy the game?’ She was eager to know what he thought, pleased to have seen a change in him, to see a side of Samson she had never witnessed before.

Samson stretched out in the sun. He yawned and looked back at her, his tail wagging.

‘Yes, it was… fun.’

His hesitation made Poppy wonder if he’d ever had fun before.
