Keepsakes

In the bedroom of my East Village apartment, there was a large rug that covered the wooden floors. In the middle of the room, there was a table, and on that table sat a snakeskin box. The box’s width was about the size of a novel. Its height: a martini glass.

Inside the box were relics of the men that I’ve left floating out in the world. Amongst the bones: a chopstick, a wooden cross, a potion in a bottle, two belts (one leather and one woven), a telescope, seven crystals, a copper bracelet, a dried-up air plant, and a Polaroid photo at the very bottom.

Back then, I had no apologies regarding the contents of the box or the box itself. I was trying to write a story and I was determined to find the perfect character. And if need be, I decided, I would create the character piece by piece, keepsake by keepsake. From these men, I collected only what was necessary.
