“Would you like a tour of the place?” Alba asked Lauren timidly as she stood at the window, looking out at the lush grounds. She had hoped that Piero would call her back and was contemplating calling him but had not made up her mind about that yet. She turned and looked at the woman standing behind her.

“You don’t have any charity to attend to?”

Alba flushed at the caustic remark, causing Lauren to compare her demeanor to that of her arrogant brother. Piero was confident and sure of himself, maybe because of the way he looked and his commanding presence. His sister was the exact opposite. She looked like she was afraid of her own shadow and the clothes she wore, albeit expensive and of excellent quality, that did not flatter her looks. And she was beautiful – if only she would do something different with her hair and stopped wearing pastel colors.

“I am in a pissy mood.” She shook her head. “And I told your brother that I would watch my language. Yes, thank you. A tour of the place would be delightful. How am I doing?”

Alba could not stop the laughter tugging at her lips. “Very well. Shall we?”

Lauren, a smile curving her lips, nodded, and walked towards the girl.

“I am afraid that your mother is not pleased with me.”

“Mother is hard to please.”

Lauren looked sideways at the girl thoughtfully, realizing that she was someone who could probably become a friend.

“I understand that you will be getting married?”

Alba nodded and led the way through a narrow maze of passage.

“In August.”

“Are you in love with him?” She stopped as Alba held a door open for her to enter.

“Scusa?”

Lauren stepped into what appeared to be some sort of ballroom with a high arched ceiling and dark panels. The floor shone from the sunlight shining through the clear floor to ceiling window and glittered off the heavy ornate chandelier hanging from the ceiling. Sconces with candles entrenched were all around the vast room, giving a romantic feel to it.

“This is lovely,” she breathed. “Like something out of the Victorian era.” She turned to Alba. “I am sure you heard the question.”
