‘Would you like to go on an adventure?’ whispered Elsie in Anna’s ear, tying up the strap of her bikini top behind her back as Alice lay naked on her own beach towel, enjoying being slathered in suncream by Ben.

‘Always,’ she whispered back, conspiratorially. As she did so, Elsie reached down and picked up her and Anna’s rock shoes and then turned back with a wild grin.

‘Come with me,’ she reached out and took hold of her girlfriend’s hand and together they skipped away across the sand, breaking into a run as Tom sat up, watching them in confusion. Anna just shrugged at him as she bounded away, doing her best to keep up with the giggling Elsie, her friend’s dark hair flowing freely in the breeze rolling in off the sea.

‘Where are we going?’ she shouted after her.

‘You’ll see,’ she called back.

The far end of the beach appeared to be a sheer cliff face, extending up perhaps a hundred meters where it was topped by a canopy of trees and lush greenery. As Anna peered up at it she had to shield her eyes from the glare bouncing off the surf.

Elsie appeared to be making a beeline toward a darker area, and as they drew closer Anna’s chest filled with trepidation as the dull patch slowly morphed into the mouth of a small portentous cave.

‘Want to see where this goes?’ she said with a shrug.

‘In the cave?’ said Anna. ‘You want me to follow you into a dark, damp, sea cave?’

‘Come on,’ said Elsie, levering her rock shoes onto her feet as she brushed away the sand. Anna followed suit, then took hold of her girlfriend’s hand as they walked side by side into the darkened entrance.

The air just beyond the mouth was several degrees cooler than the exposed beach and Elsie smiled, relief on her face as she turned, her arms stretched out, soaking it in. The moment the wider world disappeared she felt that familiar tingle - that undefinable quiver of excitement at the idea of exploring the unknown.

Anna grinned, rubbing her arms for a moment as she peered ahead into the darkness, but as her eyes adjusted she could see that there was a small amount of light behind the turn ahead and she relaxed as her fear of getting lost in a dark, dead end cave dissipated.

‘I think it loops round? When we were getting close on the jet skis, it looked like the mouth opened out onto the ocean. Shall we keep going?’

Anna nodded, taking hold of Elsie’s hand once again as she led the way forward. Together they clambered up a group of wet rocks, their shoes gripping the shining surface as they helped each other climb higher.

The system narrowed and brightened ahead and Elsie shuffled up, turning to pull Anna up behind her, then
