Chapter 11

For the next few weeks, Caiden did his best to put Leander out of his thoughts. It wasn’t easy, because not only had he trusted the shifter, but he’d thought they were becoming more than just casual lovers. After all, I told him I cared about him, and he said the same about me. And perhaps he did. I suppose I’ll never know. Nor do I want to. After what that bastard pulled…You don’t try to kill someone you honestly care about.

Zander, being a wise boss, sent Caiden off on jobs, one after another. Small ones, but they kept Caiden from becoming depressed. Not that he would have—too much. Caiden was used to being alone and friendless, except for Zander and now Rian, and a very few of Zander’s people who he had to do with on occasion.

Two days after his return from the first job, Rian called, asking Caiden to join him for supper. Warily, Caiden accepted.

Rian’s house looked the same, of course, bringing back memories of the time Caiden had spent there with Leander. It must have shown in his expression because Rian said, while handing Caiden a glass of wine, “He is not worth your time, thinking of him. He betrayed both of us. You, perhaps, more than me. I will admit, I thought of him as the son I might have had, had I been so lucky.” He shook his head. “Now I’m quite glad I’ve never managed to sire any children. They can break your heart.”

“Leander is good at that,” Caiden replied sourly. “As long as you’ve been around, you don’t have children? I’ll admit, I’m surprised.”

“I left that up to Zander. He had several, back in the day.”

“Where are they now?”

“Here, there, everywhere. You’ll have to ask him. He’s not much for keeping in touch with them or their progeny.”

“Interesting.” Caiden took a drink of wine before saying, “There is Theirn, who Zander says is his many-greats grandson.”

“He is. You’ve met him?”

“Yes. He came to my rescue when I was stranded, after escaping Leander’s death trap, so to speak.”

Rian looked quizzical, asking, “What do you think of him?”

“He’s definitely not the friendly type. At least with me.”

“Not with anyone, from what I’ve seen.”

“Why did…? Never mind. I’m sure you don’t know.”

“Why is he here and working for Zander?” Rian shrugged. “Not from any sort of nepotism. Theirn has certain skills that come in handy at times.”

“Such as?” Caiden asked.

“That I know of? He’s a gifted mind speaker—even with those who are not elves—if he so desires and they can hear him. He’s also skilled at casting a Glamour to make the viewer see him as someone other than who he is.”

Caiden cocked an eyebrow. “Is he going to be doing me out of a job?”

“I seriously doubt that. It’s a spell, and will vanish as the caster becomes tired, since it takes energy to use it.”

“It might come in handy at times, however,” Caiden said pensively.

“Indeed it does. For now, though, how about we drop the subject of work.
