A couple of days later, while Vicki was checking her ponies after school, she noticed Koolio didn’t come cantering up with Pepe and Casper to greet her. Out of the corner of her eye she caught a flash of movement and she spun around to investigate further. There, in the coffin ditch they’d built just a few weeks earlier, four white legs were pawing the air in panic.

Screaming for her parents, Vicki ran to her beloved pony. Koolio lay upside down in the marshy waterway, pinned on either side by the retaining banks which created a narrow sunken jump. The only good thing was that the stream running through the ditch was shallow, even in winter, so Koolio’s head was above water — not at all like the time that Koolio had almost drowned in the river on the boundary of the reserve.

“I’ll get some spades — we’ll have to dig him out,” Dad said when he reached them, barely pausing before sprinting back the way he had come. While she waited for her dad to return, Vicki settled down beside Koolio to reassure him.

A nicker filled the air and Vicki looked up, startled to see Pepe and Casper watching nervously, worried for their friend. Beside her, Koolio started thrashing, and Vicki’s attention was drawn back to her frightened pony.
