These examples again point out how positive influence can be fairly easy, and suggest that tricking an intoxicated person might be a more effective method of positive influence than other coercive methods, which can lead to stubborn refusals of help.
One of our first-year URI students recounted an incident that happened when he was in high school:
When he told me he was going to âtagâ the side of the school ⦠I laughed at him, thinking he wouldnât do that. After school ⦠I couldnât find Fred anywhere. Little did I know, he was on the side of the school building, with a few cans of paint ⦠He shook the can, pointed it to the wall, and was ready to spray. Just then, I put my acting skills to the test and yelled, âGet out! A teacher is coming!â
This attempt at positive influence was effective, as the respondent and âFredâ ran away without committing the crime.
