SIENNA STARED AT CIAN. He stared right back, flames dancing in his emerald eyes, waiting. All the fight suddenly went out of her. She was tired. So tired. Tired of the deception. Tired of the lies. She’d had enough.

Her shoulders sagged and her breath escaped her in a long sigh. “A woman,” she said finally, her voice barely above a whisper. “The woman who brought me here. I’m not from the Campbell clan. I’m from somewhere else entirely.” Her eyes lifted to find Cian’s. “I’m from the future, and the woman who brought me here is called Irene MacAskill.”

There. She’d said it. Now that the words were out of her mouth, her secret finally spoken, she felt strangely light, as though she’d put down a heavy weight she’d been carrying all this time. She braced herself for Cian’s incredulity. Would he think her mad? Or worse, a witch?

His reaction was wholly unexpected. The color drained from his face and an expression flitted across his handsome features, one she’d never expected to see: fear.

He took a step back, staggered, and lowered himself onto one of the chairs. “Irene MacAskill?” he breathed. “She brought ye here?”

Firelight played across his features, making his hair gleam like burnished copper. Half his face was cast into shadow meaning she couldn’t make out his expression.

“Yes,” she said slowly, surprised by his reaction. “You look like that name means something to you.”

“Is it ye?” he whispered. “Are ye the one she meant? Oh, Lord. What is she up to now?”

“What are you talking about?”

His eyes found and held hers. Tiny flames danced in their green depths as he studied her with a stare like a hawk. “If ye are not from this time,” he said at last. “Then what time are ye from?”

Sienna blinked in surprise. “You believe me? You don’t think I’m crazy? Or a witch or something?”

He shrugged then gestured at her clothing. “I knew ye were no Campbell. I knew ye were something else right from the first moment I met ye.”

“Then why didn’t you say something?”

“What would I have said? It was clear ye didnae wish to share yer secrets and besides, ye were just a random woman met on the road. What did it matter to me what story ye chose to tell about yerself?”

Her nostrils flared. “And now?”

“Now? Now?” He let out a long, slow breath. “Now, lass, everything has changed. Ye still havenae answered my question. Where are ye from? Who are ye really? And what part did Irene MacAskill play in bringing ye here?”

Sienna took a deep breath. This was not a conversation she’d planned on having. When she’d snuck out of the castle this evening, she’d hoped to find Irene, go home, and Cian would never have had to know about any of this. But now she found herself speared by his intense green stare and she wondered what she should say. How much should she tell him?

“Ye can trust me, lass,” he said softly, as if reading her thoughts.
