His reaction is easy to guess, easy to see. No dissembler, he. He tastes corruption on his tongue; his nostrils flare at the stink of it; he wants to go and wash his hands.

After the disgust the anger, burning, cleansing. He must feel as Christ felt at the temple gate, seeing the moneychangers arrayed in all their pride and greed before him. No doubt, like Christ, he wants to damage and destroy, to use the weapons of his body and his voice and all the influence he has.

It’s no sin, such an anger. He follows his master, in this as in everything. And one thing we can be sure of, his fury’s not directed at the obvious target, the journalist who scraped this story from the dregs and residues of a diseased imagination.

No, he sees further than that. He must do. He doesn’t watch the game, he watches the player, the hand that moves the pieces.

Last week it was muscle, vandals at the marquee. This week it’s more subtle, a story designed to degrade and discredit him and through him the whole mission, the movement that has gripped this city and drawn it so much closer to God; but he’ll be seeing the same hand at work.

No chance of its being coincidence. He knows the flavours of conspiracy.
