STEP 4

Now add a really dark color made of Ultramarine Blue and Burnt Umber. Use this to set the eye with a deeper-looking socket. You can also use it on the mouth, gill and above the eye. Take a blue-gray mixture and wash it from behind the eye and down the back. Build this up with several washes, allowing the scales to show through, keeping the paint more opaque near the eye. Use your lightest value of Cadmium Yellow Light and white to build the bright highlights. This is also washed on the area behind the eye to intensify that highlight. Use bright washes to work softly around some of the scales as well. It would be easy to add more color washes over the painting if you want to make the fish brighter. The washes would be transparent to allow the scales to show through. Just a little reworking of the dark and light accents would be necessary because the washes will dull both the light and dark values.
