Chapter 12

JD

JD stared at the car as Sasha drove off. He gripped the back of his neck and rubbed at the tension in his muscles. The view morphed into a sad, gray water-color. The image of Sasha faded away like bleeding paint. He re-entered his parents’ house. Despite having grown up in the house, nothing appeared recognizable. Everything was upside-down and inside out.

“You motherfucker!” Ian roared and shoved JD.

The aggressive move knocked JD out of his stupor. He adjusted his posture defensively.

“Fuck You!” JD retorted. How dare Ian yell at him. Ian wasn’t going to accept his blame in this whole debacle? JD was the one getting screwed. The girl of his dreams just drove away.

“I can’t fucking believe you!” Ian yelled, standing with his body tensed.

“I can’t fucking believe you,” JD threw back at Ian. “What the fuck? You fell in love after one date?” With Sasha, JD totally understood how that could happen. He screamed, intentionally provoking his brother. “I can’t fucking believe you let her go!” JD was wrong about his brother. He used to think he was brilliant. In fact, he was a fucking moron.

“FUCK YOU!” Ian’s fist flew through the air and connected with JD’s face.

JD didn’t see it coming. The connection stung. He threw his fisted hands up in front of his face, guarding his head from another blow. In a hockey game, JD would have fought back, but he and Ian weren’t on the ice. They never competed directly against each other. The few years of difference in their age had kept them in separate age divisions. He wasn’t about to fight his brother now.

“God dammit stop!” His mom shouted. Her use of God’s name in vain jolted his awareness. Things were serious on the very rare occasion when she swore.

“The two of you need to stop,” his dad said, adamantly stepping between the men. He was shorter than both Ian and JD, but his place as the patriarch of the family made him more formidable. “We are going to talk about this as a family. Let’s all go sit down.” They all followed his dad back to the living room.

“Yeah, sure, that’s going to work.” JD heaved on the sarcasm. Well, he wasn’t going to physically fight, but that didn’t mean he was ready to talk constructively.

“Yes. We. Are,” his dad barked. “Your mother and I are not going to allow this to become something that breaks up our family.” His parents nodded toward one another.

“There is nothing more important than this family and we are going to solve this issue.” His mom handed him a bag of frozen peas. The swelling had already started. “And don’t think you are walking out of here until we come to a resolution.” JD placed the cold package on his eye.

“There isn’t a solution, mom.” JD complained. “I never met someone I cared for as much as Sasha.” If Ian bowed out gracefully that would be a convenient resolution. Easy-peasy. Why not? He had done it already months ago.
