Tuck, John and Eliza were the only ones at the cottage when we returned. They were quietly playing Elizaâs version of tic-tac-toe. John knew the moment we stepped into the clearing that something had happened and made us share. He and Tuck listened with their brows drawn together.
When we finished, John said, âI know better than not to believe something you tell us, Maryanne. But Lady Bridgette using a sword?â He shook his head. âI donât think so. The nobles donât let their women learn that sort of thing.â
âI can show you.â Bridgetteâs chin jutted, but her words were soft.
John shook his head. âI donât own a sword. Tuckâs the only one currently here who has one, and you canât show us much on your own.â
âWellâ¦â She stretched out the word. âI might have one hidden in the dress I was wearing when you took me.â She looked at her feet.
I stared at her with my mouth open. Weâd never searched Eliza or Bridgette for weapons. Weâd certainly never checked Bridgetteâs pile of clothing after she removed it. None of us thought either of them were a risk in that department.
âGo on, then.â Tuck got to his feet. âShow us what youâve got.â
Bridgette jumped up and ran into the cottage where sheâd left her dress folded neatly on the ground in the back corner.
âWhoâs showing us what theyâve got?â Rob strolled into our clearing with Miller close behind.
âMaryanne and Bridgette have been killing soldiers. Bridgetteâs about to show us how,â said John.
Rob lifted an eyebrow.
âWith her sword,â added Tuck, his tone dry.
Millerâs eyes rounded when Bridgette returned with her sword, a little larger than the one sheâd used today, but not so big as what the boys used. He took a step toward her, his eyes on her weapon. âWhoa. You have a sword? Can you use it?â
Robâs smile was confused. âYou mean youâve actually killed soldiers today?â
I nodded, and let Bridgette tell the story.
Robâs face grew more and more serious, the longer Bridgette talked. When she was finished, he pointed his finger at me. âYou are not to leave the clearing unless one of us is with you.â He glanced at Bridgette and Eliza. âNone of you women are to leave the clearing.â
âDonât be ridiculous.â I didnât need to be wrapped in cotton wool or treated like a prisoner. Weâd come away alive today. That was all that mattered. âIt wasnât even that dangerous.â Understatement. But he wasnât ever going to tell me what I could or couldnât do.
âTo be fair, you were considering handing yourself over to the soldiers,â said Tuck.
I glared at him. Bridgette left that part out when she told Rob. I wasnât sure if sheâd just forgotten to mention it, or if she knew how Rob might react, but Iâd been grateful. Should have known Tuck would do what he could to drop me in it.
âYou were what?â
I shrugged. âYou wouldnât have done anything different.â
âI would have! Because I wouldnât have walked into a fight unarmed.
