Chapter 13: Change of Plans

We don’t get far before Cori’s phone emits that awful buzzing. Cori pushes a button on the dashboard and says, “Vega.”

Hey, now the sound of the caller’s voice comes from the car, like it’s one of the boss’s radio programs.

“Ferguson here,” a man’s voice says. “We got a couple of suspects we’re taking to the station. A couple of teenagers after drug money. We caught them a few blocks away with a stash—pot and coke. We’re getting fingerprints now to see if it matches the ones on the cash register.”

“Good. I’ll stop by the scene and then meet you at the station.” She pushes a button and the sound stops.

“So, they already solved the crime?” Molly’s voice is edged with hope

“I wish it were that easy,” Cori says. “But this is just the beginning. Having a suspect and building a solid case are two different things.” She shakes her head. “Sad.” Her voice thickens with emotion. “I hate drugs. Especially drugs and kids.”

Molly leans forward with sudden interest. “What happens to the drugs?”

“They’re tagged and go into the Evidence drawer.”

Molly thinks a minute and then asks, “When people train dogs to find drugs, where do they get the drugs? From the police after the drugs aren’t needed as evidence?”

Cori gives Molly a curious glance. “Some of the K-9 unit trainers begin with Pseudo—that’s with a P like the word for fake or imitation—substances chemically designed to smell like the actual drugs. Then they move on to having the dogs train on the real thing.”

“Where do they get those?”

“The Pseudo’s available online. The real stuff they get from agencies that control drugs used for training. They have to have department approval.” Another glance. “Why?”

“Just wondering,” Molly says, her face toward the window. “Just a few more blocks now.”

“Just wondering?’ Cori presses.

I can hear Molly’s heart speed up. “This friend of my dad’s, that he’s, um, sort of seeing —” Molly turns and studies her mother’s face “—Annie Harmon’s her name. Anyway, she’s teaching me how to train dogs to find bed bugs and she has all these vials with live and dead bugs. I just wondered when they train drug dogs where they get the drugs for training.”

Molly jabs a finger toward the windshield. “That’s it. The white house with the van.”

Mrs. Franklin and Tanya meet us in the driveway before Cori even has a chance to turn off the engine. While the two women talk, Molly gets me out of the car, and she and Tanya lug all our stuff inside.

“Are you staying the whole weekend?” Tanya asks, appearing delighted at the prospect.

“Probably.” Molly says the word as if it has a bitter taste. “Probably my only visit ever and it’s already over.”

“Oh. Sorry.” Tanya says, her face sympathetic.

“But I found out about where to get the stuff to train Doodle. So he can find the pot and clear Kenny.” I lift my ears at the sound of my name, but Molly just repeats the conversation she had with her mother.
