Chapter forty-two

The Half-Blood and the Prince

In the last few days, I had been through a lot.

I’d seen some shit, some really messed up shit.

My introduction to the world beyond my bedroom hadn’t exactly been smooth sailing, and nothing had been anywhere in the same stratosphere as normal. So at this point, I was under the impression that nothing could surprise me. Not after getting my door kicked in by the monstrous male that was Vincent Feral, with dark hair, wicked words, and hate-filled eyes looking to make me his slave queen.

Not after getting attacked at a gas station by two enemy vampires, decapitating one of them with my bare hands, and then being finger-fucked by the youngblood against a gas pump.

And definitely not after spending the night hiding out in Eros’ coffin, watching him dismember a man right in front of my eyes, and then spending the night strapped to his torture bench, taking his delicious pain. Not to mention the way he fucked me like an animal and claimed me as his right afterward.

Nope. Nothing surprised me anymore, not around here.

So when I entered the library, I braced myself for anything. I was prepared for a room filled with coffins, or maybe it had been converted into extra dungeon space. I wouldn’t be shocked to see the coven’s collection of their victims’ bones over the centuries or maybe Deathwish’s expanded torture tool collection. Or hell, on a slightly more positive note, maybe some kind of kinky sex room or a feeding den.

What I wasn’t expecting was…well…books.

I had prepared myself for the worst, so when I found myself standing in the most gorgeous library filled with countless antique books, furniture, and not a single weird vampire thing in sight, my lungs emptied of all air.

Is this what Belle felt like when the Beast showed her his amazing library in an otherwise damp and depressing castle?

It was paradise.

For the first time since leaving my room, I found myself surrounded by something familiar. Books had always been the thing to pull me through the darkest times growing up, and now here I was surrounded by countless stories, worlds I could disappear into when this one became too much. Everything about the space was comforting, from the heavy drapes pulled over the windows and the candles lit in their candelabras that washed the space in a soothing orange glow to the scent of leather and old paper.

It was every goth nerd girl’s dream.

As much as I wanted to stay here forever, hidden among the books, I reminded myself of the task at hand and pushed forward. If things went according to plan, I would have a whole eternity to acquaint myself with every book in here.

I wandered among the shelves, drooling over the vast collection of their contents, when I found myself in front of an ornate, baroque-style fireplace with a roaring fire in the hearth. My gaze wandered up to the wall where a painting had once been mounted, by tell of the discolored square in the wallpaper.
